Ok some education as it seems some followers think that horsecarts are here to increase tourism and that they make a huge profit. They exist because laws forbid other forms of transport. And if you think they are getting rich I’ll provide free accommodation and an educational tour; then you can decide if they are indeed profiting off of the horses (hint they aren’t) or simply making a living.

Cidomo - Horsecart used to transport tourists only on the Gili Islands (we will cover dongol/cikar used for goods in another post)
Please note that the number of carts is limited on each island
Cidomo owner - the person or business that owns the cidomo and the license
Coachman - the employee who works driving the cidomo and directly caring for the horses (one cidomo might have several coachmen)

Cost of a cidomo license:
750,000,000 and up (that’s $48k usd) less than one per year is sold most have been owned by same family/business since the 80’s

Cost of a working horse/pony:
15,000,000 to 40,000,000
That’s $975 to $2600 usd it depends on size, age, color, breed, etc larger more colorful horses/ponies will cost more than smaller ones of a drab color

Cost of a harness 6,000,000 $390 usd

Cost of a trip on a cidomo: 100,000 to 250,000 for these purposes the average cost is 150,000 which is $9.75

Coachman pay: 30% of daily income if he uses horses belonging to the cidomo owner. 50 to 70% if he uses his own horses. Average trips per day assuming 3, 4 hour shifts (3 ponies worked) 15-25 trips per day. Let’s say 20 trips at 150,000 each this is 3,000,000 which is $195. And since each situation is different we will say the average coachman makes 50% of this per day which is $97.50 usd

Average cost of horse care is 2,500,000 to 3,000,000 per horse per month. And each cart must operate with a minimum of two horses. (The majority own 3-4) Even if the coachman does not own the horses he pays for their care so that’s average 5,000,000 per month out $325 usd

Monthly tax to operate cidomo is 1,500,000 or $97.50 since some owners pay this and some coachman pay this for our purposes let’s split it $48.75 usd

Taxes paid on cidomo income are 25% to government and we decided average daily income above is $97.50 less 25% so now it’s $73.13 per day

So rough monthly income of an average coachman is: $2,193 usd

Rough monthly expenses for horse care of an average coachman owning only 2 horses (many own more) is $325 usd

Average taxes paid per month is $48.75 usd (others already subtracted)

Land rent for horses is on average 500,000 to 1000,000 per month so let’s add in a cost of 750,000 which is $48.75 usd

So income is $2,193 usd (assuming working 12 hour days no days off)

Expenditures are $325 + $48.75 + $48.75 (assuming ownership of 2 horses)

So now income for a coachman is $1770.50 working 12 hours daily and no days off

Now keep in mind this does not include their rent for their home, care for their family (average family size 4-5), care for their elders (expected), food for humans, medical care for humans or horses, or any other expenses. And of course we know realistically that they aren’t likely working 12 hours x 30 days so their income may be considerably less.

So by these calculations I think we can safely conclude that the average cidomo coachman earns around $1200 to $1600 per month given days off and working hours etc. With this income they must support their family and pay for their home expenses such as food, electricity, etc, and keep in mind travel as 90% of cidomo coachman have family in Lombok so they go home 1-2 days a week to take money home to their family. Here on the island they live in shacks at the local stables.

Keep in mind these are averages. There are some who own homes on Gili, there are some without families, others with 20 to support.
The point of the conversation is that these people are far from getting rich and have considerable commitments financially in regards to horse and family care. Also realize that this is still much higher than the average minimum wage for other workers on the islands.
