HELPING LOCAL WHILE TRAVEL TO BALI!!

HOW YOUR EXPERIENCE IN BALI WILL HELP THE LOCAL COMMUNITY ?

While tourism in Bali has done much to raise awareness of the Balinese culture, it has greatly impacted daily life in rural areas of the island. Many people have left their villages to work in tourist areas, leaving valuable family land vulnerable to being sold for development.

Five Pillar Experiences aims to reverse this trend towards urbanization and over development by educating rural Balinese youth about their community and culture and training them to develop unique Inspired Community Adventures for curious visitors.

Inspired Adventures provide conscious travelers with an invaluable opportunity to venture far beyond the beaten paths of Bali, to discover the local rural village life, and to be inspired by the beauty and creativity of Balinese culture. These adventures also support and incentivize local communities to keep and maintain their ancestral lands and sustainable way of living.

We invite you to embark on one of our exciting adventures to rural Bali. Most of the proceeds are used to support the local communities we work with and the work of Five Pillar Foundation.

We involve in farming with one of our organic community in Bali with high school student from Hawaii, we learned so many thing about living healthy and wealthy through farming, and we hope farming still be one of our style of living.

“I am a 45-year- old housewife from Java. Before I got married, I worked for six years as a housekeeper in Denpasar. I now have two beautiful children, and I work together with my husband on the farm. He climbs up coconut trees to collect the coconut sap, which I use to make brown sugar. With the farm, we are able to take care of our family. One of my children works at Five Pillar Foundation. They take groups around West Bali. Sometimes they visit our farm. This makes me very happy because our family gets additional income that helps to continue our traditional way of making brown sugar.” -Ibu Mangadi

"As the leader of Pendem village and as a member of the subak community, I learned a lot about the subak* system. I realized how important it is to keep the environment in balance.

A long time ago, there were many rice fields. We lived together as a community in harmony. Now, many of these rice fields have disappeared. I felt I needed to say something to my community, maybe even to start a movement to inspire the community. I wanted them to care about their rice fields, to engage in organic agriculture and to keep the Tri Kita Karana philosophy in mind. Tri Hita Karana is partly about having a relationship with nature and deeply understanding how nature works. When I'm planting seeds on my land, I keep this philosophy in mind. I plant just one seed in one spot. Other farmers tell me that I should plant three seeds in one spot because, in their eyes, one seed is not enough.

But, at the time of harvest, I somehow manage to have a yield of 50% more than them. Other farmers see my results and ask me 'How is that even possible?'. I tell them, 'Tri Hita Karana is so important. Learning to farm in harmony with nature gives us a bigger harvest.'

Two years later, I have built a community of farmers who are actively participating in the subak system and following the Tri Hita Karana just as our ancestors once did. We now have bigger harvests and our village life is more prosperous."

Sustainable tourism is about re-focusing and adapting. A balance must be found between limits and usage so that continuous changing, monitoring and planning ensure that tourism can be managed. This requires thinking long-term (10, 20+ years) and realizing that change is often cumulative, gradual and irreversible. Economic, social and environmental aspects of sustainable development must include the interests of all stakeholders including indigenous people, local communities, visitors, industry and government.

Educate Others To Be Responsible Travellers
Being a responsible traveller might come naturally to some, but others may just not be aware about the implications their actions can have when they are abroad.
If you see someone unintentionally doing something that is detrimental to the environment or to the local people and culture, perhaps mention something in a friendly way. Start discussions about responsible travel with people in your hostel, hotel or who you are on tour with. It is only through education that we can help spread the word about sustainable tourism.
Before you head out on your gap year learn how to be an ethical and sustainable traveller.

Support the local community responsibly

Be wary of giving gifts or money to beggars, children, and people you have just met. We know it feels like a good deed, but you’ll just be perpetuating the tourist-as-saviour stereotype, and oftentimes those dollars you give aren’t even landing in the hands of the person you gave them to, especially with child beggars who are frequently part of a larger ring run by a leader at the top. Tourism can be hugely beneficial to the local economy, but only when it’s provided in a sustainable way. Supporting the community through a local school, clinic, or development project may be more constructive than just handing out donations to people you pass. This issue is one of the main reasons that we launched our In Focus tours, which don’t recommend throwing money at local causes and walking away, but rather supporting local initiatives to bring in money in a way that remains sustainable for years to come.

Ways To Be a Responsible Traveler

Volunteer Some Of Your Time
Whether you are travelling for two weeks or two years, volunteering a portion of your time to worthwhile causes and with reputable organisations can make a world of difference.
If you have a skill that may be useful in a developing nation, such as medical care experience, an engineering background or have worked in social care, there are a whole multitude of avenues you can pursue to help put your expertise to good use.
But even if you are not highly qualified, you can still find beneficial ways to volunteer. It may be possible to spend a few days teaching English in rural schools, or you can check out different animal conservation projects that are active in the places you are visiting.
Another great idea is to contact a local NGO and ask if they need any supplies brought over.

A word of warning though – Don’t get caught up with the idea of ‘Voluntourism’ for the wrong reasons. Please do your research before committing to volunteering with an organisation, and think logically – Is spending a day at an orphanage really beneficial to those children? If you have no construction experience, are you suitably qualified to build a hospital in Tanzania?
And by you volunteering, are you actually taking a job away from a local who could perform the same task? Instead of paying a high cost to ‘volunteer’ with a NGO, don’t be afraid to admit that perhaps it is better to just donate that money and let the experts handle the task.
