[LED lights] When it comes to bulbs, we only use LED at our villa! 💡 The reason is simple: LED bulbs convert nearly 100% of the energy they consume as light while the regular ones only convert about 10%. A small change can make a BIG difference. 😉

[Water Saving]

Not a single drop of water goes to waste at our villa! 👏 The water our guests use for the sink and shower gets processed by a local waste water garden so that we can reutilize it for the toilets and plants as well. How great is that? Together we can do so much for the environment!

Did you know Lombok has around 6 months of monsoon season? 🌧️ At Villa Serena, we take advantage of this season to accumulate the water from the roof to filter it and use it to fill our panoramic pool and other water facilities. You'll always get clean, filtered water. 👌

[BUTTERFLIES COME AND ENJOY OUR VARIETY OF FLOWERS!]

Do you believed that plants speak to each other’s?

Our plants play big role to our suitability living. For practical usage, a part of garden is dedicated for purifying used water from shower and sinks, after the water being treated by the waste water garden, those water would be stored and used for flushing toilets or garden irrigation.

We have a green roof on top of our TV room, the green roof acts as heat isolation, so we consume less energy for indoor climate control.

Other plants in the garden is all mixed nicely with different native plants spices.

What we like the most is when butterflies come and enjoy our variety of flowers!

[WOOD FROM INDONESIA SUSTAINABLE FOREST, RECYCLED MATERIALS]

We built the villa with steel structure, so it will survive in case of earthquake.

The other materials, such as teak wood from sustainable forest in Indonesia. Lime stone from Bali, furnitures are all made in Indonesia. Our cute potteries are handmade in Bali and Lombok.

We are eager to support Indonesia craftmanship and source locally and sustainably.

[MINIMISE WATER CONSUMPTION, BUT WE WANT A POOL (AND A SLIDE!)]

We used to turn on the tap and have clean water. Which is not always the case in Lombok. Water is precious in Lombok, an island surrounded by sea.

Lombok has around 6 months of monsoon season, and what’s more fortunate than receiving gift from the sky?

So we decided to make us of our roof to direct rainwater to an underground tank. We captured rainwater by the roofs, filtered, and stored for the pool and other water consumption facilities, ensuring that you get the cleanest water and making sure that we use all the natural resources provided.

The used-water from sink and shower water is processed by a local waste water garden and utilised for our toilets. Every single drop of water is eventually treated and deployed in the vibrant and thriving onsite garden.

[Rᴇɴᴇᴡᴀʙʟᴇ Eɴᴇʀɢʏ ɪɴ VILLA SERENA]

Thanks to the positioning of the villa, we avoid direct sunlight goes into indoor. Natural breeze ventilates the villa, lessening the use of air conditioning.

The less energy consumption inspired us to switch to the solar power, the sun is abundant in Lombok, It gave foods to plants, give energy to us.
Ultimately providing sufficient energy to villa, and giving excessive power to the grid.

All our light bulbs are LED bulb, which consume very little energy. We installed fans almost everywhere in the villa. Our fridge is very energy effective. A fully charged battery can support these electrical appliance for 2 days power outage.

Pᴀssɪᴠᴇ Dᴇsɪɢɴ to minimise climate control energy consumption.

First and foremost, building a sustainable villa needs the right architect. Villa Serena is built by , who specialized on sustainable architecture. We are very fortunate to found them.

In Lombok, electricity supply is not stable and it is expensive. The local solutions are small windows minimize direct sunlight goes into the house, and shiny tile flooring helps to cool down the indoor temperature. Therefore, the village houses consume very little electricity on indoor climate control.

For Villa Serena, we located on the hill overlooking the Kuta bay, we don’t want to put ourselves behind walls and small windows.

Passive design is the most important strategies we adopt, which allows us to take advantage of the natural environment landscape, passively control indoor climate without consuming energy.

Orientation | Shades | Breeze

Indonesian teak wood pergola in the east side shades the bedrooms from morning sunlight. Facing south, the villa does not get exposure to direct sunlight.
We have smaller windows and on the west side of each room to enhance ventilation.

Natural breeze ventilates the whole villa, the villa required very little energy on indoor climate control.

Once you set the house orientation right, the house save energy by itself.

How to enjoy a sustainable holiday without living like stone age?

In the coming few posts, we will introduce why and how we built our holiday house Villa Serena, to make it the first net-zero energy villa in Lombok.

With the MotorGP in the Lombok masterplan, Lombok seems to be one of the most aspiring islands in Indonesia. Developments bring more visitors to the rural island. Tourism is blooming.

But what about INFRASTRUCTURES?

Stable electricity, clean water, waste disposals those are already a daily struggle to Lombok.

There are a few things we keep in mind, when we built Villa Serena.
