Conquering Lokon; a nighttime hike to the summit of the Lokon volcano.

This weekend we went hiking around Lokon in the Minahasa Highlands near Tomohon. Usually we hike to the active crater of the Lokon and Empung twin volcano system, which is a relatively easy hike of less than an hour from the head of the trail to the crater's edge. But this time we decided to hike to the summit of Lokon (thank you Jade and Alfi for taking us).

Starting at 01:30h in the morning we hiked to the top at 1.580m above sea level in three and a half hours, overcoming 625m in height difference and a distance of 3,4km. Although we walked in the dark, the first part of the hike was on familiar terrain; passing the farm lands at the start of the trail, through the dry riverbed and over the rocky slopes towards the active crater in the saddle between Lokon and Empung. From there we continued our hiked along the edge of the crater, ever higher up the slope of Lokon itself towards the top. For the first hour, the track of the main ascent led us through a terrain strewn with gravel and small rocks. This was tiring due to the steep incline, but it was still fairly easy going. The second part was much more difficult. Here the track cuts through the dense elephant grass that covers the highest parts of Lokon. It is muddy and very steep and some sections we were only able to pass with great difficulty by pulling ourselves up using the stems of the sharp grass.

Exhausted but with a great sense of achievement we finally reached the top. Just in time to see a beautiful sunrise together with several local youths, many of whom incredibly managed to reach the peak on their slippers and flipflops! Although it was cloudy, we had some magnificent views of the surrounding landscapes, making the challenging and exhausting hike well worth our while.

Hiking to the top of Lokon is certainly not suitable for everyone. I would give it a three and a half, or perhaps four out of five star difficulty level. But if you are up to it, you'll have an unbelievable adventure hiking through difficult terrain with incredible views, a night sky filled with a million stars and an unforgettable sunrise. You will love it!

Sunrise from the Lokon volcano at 1580m. Certainly not an easy ascent, it took us three and a half hours of nighttime hiking to overcome 950 altitude meters, but well worth the effort.

Camping in the great outdoors far from the hustle and bustle of cities and towns, hiking through pristine forests and climbing the slopes of Anak Soputan, or little Soputan, is an amazing adventure. 🏕️🥾🌋
Hiking up the volcano is great during nice weather, but the cold weather, clouds and wind we experienced this time did not detract from our adventure but made it more epic, added to the mystery and made the achievement of climbing all the way to the top that much greater.
If you like to join Insulinde Tours Manado on a hiking and camping trip to the Soputan volcano don't hesitate to send us a message. It is a great way to experience the natural wonders of North Sulawesi and we're sure you'll love it!

Photo impression of the camping trip with our guests at the Soputan volcano. The first day started with the trip to the camping site; A 4 km climb where you have to overcome a height difference of 300 m. After setting up camp and having a well-deserved cup of coffee and tea, we walked further to the viewpoint from where you can see the Soputan volcano. That was another four kilometer walk, but unfortunately it was cloudy and we were unable to see the volcano. The next morning we climbed to the top of Little Soputan. A strenuous hike of over seven kilometers where we eventually climbed to a height of almost 1,580 meters. The hike to the top of the small Soputan is already difficult in good weather, but the cold weather with strong wind and lots of rain made it extra difficult this time. After returning we broke down camp and walked back to the starting point where the car was waiting for us. It was a few great days in nature far away from civilization and well worth the effort. Contact Insulinde Tours Manado if you are interested in hiking and camping around the Soputan volcano as well. If you like being outdoors you will love it.

🌋 MOUNT AWU VOLCANO: A UNIQUE HIKE IN SANGIHE ISLAND, NORTH SULAWESI, INDONESIA 🏝️
Mount Awu Volcano is an active volcano that can be hiked. The demanding ascent through the beautiful lush rainforest takes 3-5 hours, but at the top you will be rewarded with amazing views of Sangihe Islands and the surrounding ocean. In the crater of the volcano you can see a unique lava dome.
The hike starts usually 2 am, so you can enjoy sunrise from the summit. Another possibility is to start afternoon, camp on the way and continue early morning to the summit for sunrise.

Volcano Adventure: Hike to Soputan Viewpoint

🥾 Hiking to Soputan Viewpoint is a unique activity. Soputan is one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes and a popular destination for adventure travelers.

We took our guest on a hike to the Soputan viewpoint. After picking up our guest, we started the walk from Pinawetgan around ten o'clock. After an hour of walking we reached the registration post. You register your name so that in the event of an emergency, it is known that you are on the mountain.

We then moved further into the terrain, towards the camping site. This is an open space in a pine forest, without facilities, where you can pitch your tent. This time we chose to continue to the viewpoint, where we were rewarded with spectacular views of Anak Soputan and the imposing Soputan itself.

Anak Soputan, the "little Soputan", can also be climbed, but there was no time for that. The hike to the top takes another two hours.

Around three in the afternoon we started the return journey, which brought us back to the car three hours later.

This hike is an unforgettable experience for anyone who loves adventure and wants to admire the beauty of nature.

Extra information:

- The hike to the Soputan viewpoint takes about 8 hours in total (round trip).

- It is important to wear good shoes and bring enough water.

- The climb to Anak Soputan and back can be done in a day, but is only recommended for experienced hikers. In general, it is better to camp overnight if you want to climb Anak Soputan. On the first day you climb to the camping site and possibly the viewpoint. The next morning you will start the trek to Anak Soputan before sunrise and return to the camping site at the end of the morning. You will be back down the mountain at the end of the afternoon.

Tips:

- Bring a raincoat as the weather in the mountains can change quickly.

- Make sure you have enough food and drinks with you.

- Be informed about the safety regulations for climbing volcanoes. We do not recommend climbing Soputan yourself.

We hope you enjoy your adventure on Soputan! If you would like to go on a hike or camp with us, please send us a message.

Impression of Cap Go Meh in Manado. With the Cap Go Meh parade the festivities surrounding the celebrations of the Chinese New Year that started two weeks before, come to a close. As a sign of tolerance, representatives of the other religions and kabasaran dancers who embody the local culture opened the parade. Of course there were barongsai and dragon dance groups, and richly decorated pageant wagons. The parade closed with the different houses of the Gods that were carried in procession accompanied by priests that were deep in trance.

Cap Go Meh 2024 was a big success with a parade that seems to get longer every year and thousands of people along the route. If you're ever in Manado around Chinese New Year it's highly recommended to watch the parade.

We're waiting for the start of the Cap Go Meh parade in the Chinese quarter in Manado. If you're near, come have a look. It's a real experience.

20/02/2024

North-Sulawesi has more than a dozen active volcanoes dominating the landscape, and many of them are popular tourist destinations. However, visiting active volcanoes also involves some risks.
Indonesia uses a scale with four alert levels for volcanoes: Level I; Normal (Normal), the volcano is in a normal or dormant state, with no signs of unrest or eruption, Level II; Advisory (Waspada), the volcano is showing signs of unrest, but an eruption is not imminent, Level III; Watch (Siaga), the volcano is exhibiting heightened or escalating unrest, and an eruption may occur soon, and level IV; Warning (Awas), the volcano is erupting or about to erupt, and poses a high risk of hazards to the public.
Visiting a volcano during a period of heightened activity of course depends on the level of risk you are willing to take, and the regulations and recommendations from the authorities. So, if you want to visit a volcano, make sure you check the latest alert levels, ask your guide, check our page, and follow the advice from the authorities.
Four volcanoes in North-Sulawesi show signs of heightened activity; Karangetang, Soputan, Awu and the Lokon & Empung twin volcanoes. We recommend against climbing Karangetang on Siau Island which is a notoriously dangerous volcano. Climbing Soputan is also not recommended, although there are no signs an eruption is imminent. Mount Awu on Sangihe Island also shows signs of increased activity. It can be climbed but it is not recommended to descend into the crater. Finally, the Lokon & Empung twin volcanoes are also showing increased activity in the form of fumes coming from the active crater in the saddle between the two peaks. These can be mildly irritating to your eyes and lungs when inhaled so stay up wind, but at the moment people are visiting the volcano without any problems. All other volcanoes in North-Sulawesi such as Mahawu near Lokon and Mount Ambang near Kotamobagu are at alert level I and can be safely climbed. For real-time information you can check the website of the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (https://magma.esdm.go.id/).
Volcanoes are beautiful and fascinating, but they can also be dangerous and unpredictable. Stay safe, check the latest alert levels, ask your guide or tour operator and follow the advice from the authorities. But most of all, enjoy the experience of climbing these forces of nature and enjoy your trip! 😊

10 PLACES TO VISIT IN THE MINAHASA HIGHLANDS
Looking up from Manado you’ll see the Minahasa highlands; at the same the heartland of the Minahasa people, the agricultural center of North-Sulawesi, a cool retreat already since colonial times, and a plateau pushed up over geological times by continental drifts and volcanism. No wonder there is a lot to see and to explore. Here are 10 interesting places to visit in the Minahasa highlands.

1. Tetetana is a vantagepoint from where you can see the entire northern tip of North-Sulawesi from Manado and Bunaken to the northwest, Mount Klabat in the north and the Tondano lake towards the south. It is a great place to have lunch while enjoying the views, clean air and cool temperatures.

2. Tondano lake fills the crater of the super volcano that formed the Minahasa Highlands. A drive around the lake is a pleasant daytrip, especially in combination with a lakeside lunch with udang woku, a curry dish made with fresh, locally caught crayfish.

3. Pagoda Ekayana in Tomohon is a beautiful place to visit with its remarkable Buddhist architecture and serene atmosphere that offers a unique chance to experience the cultural diversity and harmony of North-Sulawesi.

4. The Lokon & Empung twin volcanoes overlooking Tomohon are well worth a visit. A hike up towards the crater leads via an unpaved track through a dry riverbed but is doable for most.

5. Watu Pinawetengan is a cultural monument on the flanks of Soputan not far from Bukit Kasih. It forms the cultural center and heart of the Minahasa people. It is an interesting place to visit, and local people will be eager to explain its significance to you.

6. The Waruga graves in Sawangan are another must see cultural destination. Waruga’s are the traditional graves of the Minahasa people stemming from (pre-)colonial times. The guide at the Sawangan graveyard, whose ancestors are buried there too, can tell you all about the making of the graves, the carvings and the significance the grave still have today.

7. Linow lake is famous for its changing colors caused by underwater hydrothermal vents and varying chemical composition. It is a great place to relax and have a coffee.

8. Mah’ watu is an outstanding natural attraction. This parklike site on the flanks of Linow is a place full of geothermal activity such as hot springs, mud pots and fumaroles. Have a stroll and enjoy the prehistoric feel of the place.

9. Bukit Doa or prayer hill on the slopes of Mahawu is a beautifully landscaped parc with large ponds and gorgeous flowering plants. It is actually a Catholic religious attraction but all people of love to come here for its peace and quiet.

10. The Kali waterfalls is situated in the forest enclosed by steep slopes from three sides this gives the waterfall a mysterious almost magical vibe which is reinforced by the moss-covered bridge that crosses the river. Kali waterfall is well worth a visit and a good spot for the perfect holiday picture.

These were our 10 must see places of the Minahasa Highlands. There are many more beautiful, remarkable, impressive and interesting places left unmentioned, like Mount Mahawu, the sawahs of the beautiful Green Valley, the hot springs found along the west bank of Tondano Lake, the many hidden lakes and historical sites to name but a few. Let me know in the comments what your must-see places of the Minahasa Highlands are.
