The Unique Balinese Culture: An Invitation for Travelers to Embrace Balinese Traditions

The Indonesian island of Bali is renowned for its stunning beaches, vibrant landscapes, and warm hospitality. However, beyond its natural beauty lies a rich and captivating cultural tapestry that sets Bali apart from other travel destinations. From ancient rituals to intricate art forms, the Balinese culture offers a unique and immersive experience for visitors from all around the world. In this article, we invite travelers, affectionately known as "bule bule" in the local tongue, to embrace the Balinese way of life and participate in activities that celebrate its distinct traditions.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Balinese culture is its deep-rooted spiritual beliefs. Balinese Hinduism, a blend of Hinduism and local animistic beliefs, permeates every aspect of daily life. Temples, called "pura," are scattered across the island and serve as the heart of religious and community life. Bule bule are encouraged to visit these sacred sites, witness traditional ceremonies, and engage with the locals to gain a deeper understanding of the Balinese spiritual practices.

One iconic tradition that reflects the spiritual essence of Bali is the creation of canang sari. Canang sari are small woven baskets made from coconut leaves, filled with colorful flowers, rice, and other symbolic items. Balinese people meticulously craft these offerings as a form of daily devotion to express gratitude to the gods. Travelers are invited to learn the art of making canang sari, which involves arranging the flowers and carefully placing the offerings. This hands-on experience not only allows travelers to connect with the local customs but also serves as a way to show respect and appreciation for the Balinese culture.

Soma Ribek: A Day of Abundance and Gratitude

Soma Ribek, also known as "Hari Senin Penuh Anugerah" (Monday Full of Blessings), holds great significance in the Balinese Hindu calendar. The term "Soma" refers to Monday, while "Ribek" originates from the words "Ri" meaning day, and "Bek" meaning full. It is celebrated on Soma Pon Wuku Sinta, a day known for its abundant blessings and the source of life's sustenance, referred to as "Amertha."

According to the Sundarigama script, there is a deep connection between Soma Ribek and Dewi Sri, the goddess of fertility and prosperity in Balinese mythology. The sacred day of Soma Ribek holds profound meaning. Soma, associated with Lord Vishnu in his manifestation as water (udaka), symbolizes "Amertha Pawitra" or the divine nectar. Pon, associated with Lord Mahadeva in his manifestation as fire (apah/marutha), represents "Amertha Kundalini." Lastly, Wuku Sinta, associated with Lord Yama in his manifestation as fire (agni), symbolizes "Amertha Kundalini." These three forms of divine blessings are essential for the sustenance of all beings, particularly humans.

Soma Ribek is often referred to as the day of worship for Batara Sri, the deity of rice and grain, as the rituals performed on this day involve the use of rice. Rice is considered a symbol of "Amertha." According to the Pawukon script, Hindus perform ceremonies in the grain barn (lumbung) and rice storage area (pulu) on Soma Ribek. The ceremonial tools used include Nyanyah Geti-Geti (a type of palm leaf), Gringsing (traditional woven cloth), Raka-Raka (offerings made from young coconut leaves), golden bananas, and fragrant flowers.

Interestingly, on the sacred day of Soma Ribek, there is a tradition of refraining from pounding rice and selling rice grains. In some places, it is also prohibited to thresh paddy, harvest fruits or vegetables, or sell agricultural produce, especially food items. Additionally, some people observe abstinence from giving or asking for food from others.

The prohibition against pounding rice and selling rice grains is stated in the Sundarigama script as follows: "Ikang wang tan wenang anumbuk pari, angadol beras, katemah dening Bhatara Sri. Pakenania wenang ngastuti Sang Hyang Tri Pramana. Angisep sari tatwa adnyana, aje aturu ring rahinane." This means that humans are not allowed to pound rice or sell rice, and violating this prohibition would result in not receiving the blessings of Ida Batara Sri. Instead, it is encouraged to worship Sang Hyang Tripramana (the deity who governs the three aspects of reality, signs, and the philosophy of religion) and absorb the essence of divine knowledge.

During the sacred day of Soma Ribek, it is essential for humans to worship Sang Hyang Tripramana, embrace the essence of divine knowledge (tatwa), and avoid sleeping during daylight hours. This is intended to encourage people to work with enthusiasm and diligence.

Soma Ribek serves as a reminder to the Balinese people about the importance of food in their lives. It emphasizes that without sustenance, human life would be impossible. Therefore, it is fitting for humans to express gratitude and offer angayubagia (blessings) to the Creator for the abundant gift of food.

BANYU PINARUH
(Embracing Knowledge and Purification)

Banyu Pinaruh is celebrated after Rahina Saraswati. Banyu Pinaruh consists of the words "banyu," meaning water (life), and "pinaruh," derived from the words "weruh" or "pinih weruh." "Weruh" signifies knowledge, so Banyu Pinaruh can be understood as a day when we seek the source of knowledge, symbolized by water.

Melukat (Cleansing Ritual)

Banyu Pinaruh marks the beginning of a new wuku period in Bali. Before starting a new period and filling ourselves with knowledge, it is advisable to cleanse our bodies with holy water through a ritual called "melukat." As stated in Manawa Dharmasastra Book V.109:

"Adbhirgatrani cuddhyanti manah satyena cuddhyati, widyatapobhyam bhutatma, buddhir jnanena cuddhyati."

Meaning: The body is cleansed with water, the mind is purified with truth, the soul is purified with sacred teachings and self-discipline, and intelligence is purified with true knowledge.

Melukat During Banyu Pinaruh

Melukat can be performed at various locations such as natural springs (klebutan), river and sea confluences (campuhan), beaches, and temples (merajan). The ritual can be led by an Ida Pedanda, Pinandita/Pemangku, or performed individually by directly accessing the water sources, such as klebutan, campuhan, or the beach. The simplest form of melukat ceremony can be done by offering canang sari or pejati as a token of gratitude for the sacred water.

During Banyu Pinaruh, people take a sacred bath using kumkuman water in the sea. This activity aims to dissolve impurities. The sea is a place of purifying the ten sins. By performing this procession, it is expected that there will be a balance between the outer and inner aspects,"

If visiting the mentioned locations is not possible, melukat can also be performed at home. All of these practices are supported by the teachings of Hinduism as described in the book "Kesatuan Tafsir terhadap Aspek-Aspek Agama Hindu I-XI" (Unity of Interpretation on Aspects of Hindu Religion I-XI).

In conclusion, Rahina Banyu Pinaruh is an auspicious day, a day when we seek the source of knowledge to cleanse the impurities or darkness of the mind (awidya) that reside within us. As stated in the Bhagavad Gita IV.36:

"Api ced asi papebhyah, sarwabheyah papa krt tamah, sarwa jnana peavenaiva vrijinam santarisyasi."

Meaning: Even if you are the most sinful among sinners, by the boat of knowledge, you will be able to cross over the ocean of sins.

OTONAN CEREMONY

What is the significance of the Otonan ceremony in Hinduism?
In Balinese Hindu tradition, Otonan is a celebration of the day of birth for Hindus that occurs every 210 days (6 months) based on the Sapta Wara, Panca wara, and Wuku calculations. Otonan is a special day because everyone has a different birth date. While celebrating birthdays is not mandatory in Balinese Hindu tradition, Otonan is an exception. During Otonan, we express our gratitude to Sang Hyang Widhi and are given the opportunity to be reborn as human beings. We pray for our safety and well-being in life using Banten or Upakara as a means of symbolism.
The implementation of the Otonan ceremony every 6 months reminds us to appreciate and understand the meaning and purpose of being reborn into this world as humans. The importance of performing the Otonan ceremony is as follows:
Spiritually, the ceremony aims to cleanse and purify oneself through the use of holy water, tirta, from the priest and bebanten to reduce negative energy in our mind, body, and soul. In Hindu philosophy, the concept of "gunas" refers to the three basic qualities or energies that exist in all things in the universe. These three gunas are:
Sattva (satwam): This quality represents purity, goodness, and balance. It is associated with qualities like wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. When sattva is dominant, a person tends to be calm, peaceful, and focused on spiritual growth.
Rajas: This quality represents passion, activity, and restlessness. It is associated with qualities like desire, ambition, and attachment. When rajas is dominant, a person tends to be more active, driven, and focused on material success.
Tamas: This quality represents darkness, inertia, and ignorance. It is associated with qualities like laziness, dullness, and ignorance. When tamas is dominant, a person tends to be lethargic, uninterested, and lacking in motivation.
The three gunas are believed to exist in different degrees in all things in the universe, including people, objects, and even thoughts and emotions. The goal of the Otonan ceremony as a spiritual practice is to cultivate sattva and reduce rajas and tamas in order to attain a state of balance, purity, and clarity of mind.
Materially, the ceremony aims to refresh our memory, reminding us to reflect on the opportunity to be reborn as human beings, which is the most perfect creation of God, having the Tri Pramana.
The Otonan ceremony is a way for us to express our gratitude to Sang Hyang Widhi, seek blessings and guidance, and reflect on our spiritual and material growth. The ceremony is a reminder that we should always strive to improve ourselves and be grateful for every opportunity to live as human beings. Through the Otonan ceremony, we can connect with our spirituality and develop a deeper understanding of our purpose in life.
