In fact, they are said to be the second-most intelligent mammals after humans. Dolphins can recognize themselves in a mirror, and call each other unique names.

Many of our guests are freedivers! Coming to Raja Ampat doesn't mean you have to go scuba diving. Just snorkeling is amazing too! There are many reefs that are no deeper than 3-4 meters.

Sea turtles are deep divers and can stay underwater for long periods of time. As reptiles, sea turtles breathe air, but they have the ability, under natural conditions, to remain submerged for hours at a time. They even sleep underwater. Most sea turtles spend their entire life at sea, only returning to nesting beaches to lay eggs.

The Coral Triangle has many deepwater basins that have protected the region from glacial water during Earth’s ice ages. The basins allowed species to thrive without being harmed by cold water. While other regions of the world lost species en masse to glacial water, Raja Ampat’s trenches stayed at a pretty steady temperature.

One of our favourite activities besides diving is wake surfing. We usually bring a minimal surfboard and pull our guests with a rope on the dingy. It's great fun and good practice!

The coconut crab is a species of terrestrial hermit crab, also known as the robber crab or palm thief. It is the largest terrestrial arthropod in the world, with a weight up to 4.1 kg (9 lb). It can grow to up to 1 m (3.3 ft) in length from each tip to tip of the leg. Another very special and enormous creature that habitats Raja Ampat.

Manta rays are found throughout Indonesia thanks to the incredibly nutrient-rich waters. However, Raja Ampat is one of the few places in the world that has resident populations of both oceanic and reef mantas.

The northwest monsoons begin in October/November and finish in April/May. This doesn’t mean large amounts of rain, but it does mean deep-water upwellings trigger plankton blooms that attract plankton eaters like manta rays and whales. With such a rich supply of food in the water, large numbers of rays spend time in Raja Ampat feeding and also breeding.
