I grew up surrounded by creative women. My great grandmother, my grandmother, my own mother, my friends' mothers: they all made things. My mother and grandmother

were always busy with this or that, a ball of yarn being transformed into a sweater, a blanket or even a doll. Embracing this creativity, I tried many different forms of creative expression ranging from sewing and knitting to macramé, basket weaving and even dying cotton muslin using natural ingredients such as beets and goldenrod. My interests were diverse and I can remember losing patience with making exact seam allowances and, eventually, I took a break from these activities. Years later, when my grandmother, also an avid quilter, passed away, I felt a need to rekindle my interest in the skills I picked up in my younger years. My desire to honor her memory inspired me to try my hand at making quilts since the seam allowance was consistent and the stitches straight. It seemed like an easy way to get back into creating things and gave me something tangible at the end of the day. Working at a computer all day long didn't provide the same sense of satisfaction and accomplishment as seeing friends and family tucked under a quilt I made. The adventure of becoming a mother sparked a desire to expand my creative endeavors and I started with small projects - clothing and toys for my daughter. As I gained confidence, I also started making things for the rest of our family. Making things for other people seems like a natural progression in my creative journey.

Expanding our fruit bushes again this year…planted these into repurposed buckets last week, did a few more today and still have a few more to do once my husband returns with our drill…

We added another 6 blueberry bushes because anyone who knows me well knows that I am seriously addicted to blueberries thanks to growing up next to a blueberry farm.

We also have a few Saskatoon berries, some honeyberries (also called serviceberries), a few varieties of raspberry-blackberry crosses, a jostaberry and a little mulberry tree, a fruit tree which grew outside my bedroom window at my parent’s house, together with lots of black caps (black raspberries for my European friends) and lilac trees. A real bounty of beauty that I’d like for my kiddos, too.

I hope that these all thrive and one day in the not too distant future, we’ll have our own place to plant them in the ground! More on that soon…

My mother crocheted a beautiful for my eldest this past year and in typical teenage-fashion, they love it, yet can’t figure out a way to style it that suits them. The sizing is flexible, so I was delighted to discover that it also fit me and I offered (completely selflessly, of course 😂) to wear it for a while as a way to help inspire their own styling! The work of a mother is never done! 😍

Blocking my …colors were heavily inspired by the version knit by . It was a fairly easy pattern by though I modified by holding two strands of sock-weight yarn together to obtain the marled “fade” effect. Can’t wait for it dry so I can weave in the ends & wear it!

For all my friends and family members who asked me to let them know how my heart surgery went, I’m still alive and kicking (well, not quite kicking yet, but I’m hopeful it won’t be too long)! 😂❤️

Thanks so much for all the well wishes and positive vibes!!

When the lettuce is so fresh, all it needs is a pro-biotic healthy dressing.

Dressing is thrown together brine from a lacto-fermented turnip, fire cider with kombucha vinegar, olive oil & a bit of elderberry syrup I made a while back from elderberries I foraged from my in-laws ditches in a spot on the farm known as Maggie’s Corner.

When “cleaning up” involves food… Hoping to try pruning back the cape gooseberries this year instead of replanting just to see what happens. Anyone who knows my fella will know that if I turn my back, he could nip this plan in the bud and compost the plants when I’m not looking… 😂😂😂

A lunch salad with goodies from the tunnel and beyond.

Particularly impressed with the cape gooseberry that are still giving us fruit in February!! 😍 The little broccoli-like sprouts from the top of the tatsoi & paksoi give a nice crunch and the fermented turnips brighten it all up.

Served (of course) with a slice of seeded sourdough by and the Gortnamona goats cheese is from . Delicious products from the on Saturdays.

Emptying the little fella’s bag this morning when I put in his lunchbox and found a dream catcher he made at school. I was touched by what he hung on it.

He told me that one fell off and he couldn’t find it, but his 3 wishes/dreams are:
- get rid of covid
- build our new house
- get some new hens

So sweet and a lovely bonus to see that our wishes align. 🥰

A first tiny salad from the garden in 2022, topped with some oven-dried tomatoes & fermented radishes also from the 2021 garden. And some mung beans I sprouted for the hens, but stole a pinch for me!

The dressing is thrown together - some fire cider kombucha vinegar I made, olive oil and a swig of elderflower cordial I made from the back of the fridge. 😂

Taking advantage of the kids shooting basketball hoops outside to get some laundry done and thought I’d share this cute hand-embroidered pillowcase that we got as a wedding present from the mother of my dear friend Ellen Hall. Still enjoying her generosity after all these years…
