Look closely at the seed head of rushes; do you see a little white case? inside lives a little caterpillar.

The bats were out last night so I put the moth trap out , as it was so mild ( initially). This morning the trap had nine moths (see them on the egg boxes) all the one species . The December moth, I think they are quite handsome

The devils coach horse beetle raises its tail when threatened . It has very impressive jaws. this one has grabbed on to another ground beetle

The devils coach horse is an impressive beetle ,but even these carnivores of the undergrowth need to groom and keep clean. The impressive jaws mean it can cut up other ground beetles -coach-horse
