Survey day today! We had the Marine Survey Office (MSO) with us today conducting inspections both in and out of the water to make sure that everything is ship shape to carry passengers safely.

If you’re paying to go out on a boat as a passenger it must hold a licence issued by the MSO on behalf of the Department of Transport. This ensures that the vessel has been inspected to ensure its hull and structure is sound, that it carries all the relevant safety equipment and that it is stable and operates as it should when afloat and underway.

Skippers are also required to hold a commercial endorsement which ensures they hold qualifications in boat handling & navigation, emergency & survival techniques, radio communications & first aid.

We’re delighted to report that it was good news today and new licences have been issued! 🥳👏🏻

MEET THE CREW

Meet Donnchadh, the company owner and skipper here at Corrib Safari. Corrib Safari is part of Safe Water Training LTD and is led by Donnchadh Mac Cobb, one of the most experienced and qualified Powerboat Operators, Commercial Skippers, Instructors and Instructor Trainers in Ireland.

Donnchadh holds numerous qualifications for more than 20 years, including commercial endorsement to skipper vessels up to 40 miles from a safe haven. He is also a powerboat instructor, advanced powerboat instructor, senior instructor, and he is appointed by the National Governing Body, Irish Sailing, as an Instructor Trainer responsible for training and certifying instructors, advanced instructors & senior instructors around the country.
 
Having started out in the marine training industry in the early 2000s, Donnchadh gained his experience working in some of the countries biggest and busiest sailing clubs, powerboat and sailing training centres as well as numerous adventure centres, adventure tour companies and luxury experience providers over the years.
 
With 15 years experience with the Irish Coast Guard as a Coxswain and Cliff Rescue Climber, Donnchadh has significant frontline operational experience along with his comprehensive instructing and skippering career. Having previously operated his own accredited training centres and adventure tourism businesses on the east coast, Donnchadh moved to the west of Ireland where he now operates Safe Water Training’s centre of operations while also delivering services around the country. 

Donnchadh is a search and rescue training specialist and delivers these services to government organisations and charities nationally on a regular basis.

MEET THE CREW

Meet Alex, one of our skippers here at Corrib Safari. Alex is a qualified commercial skipper and holds certificates in advanced boat handling and navigation, sea survival techniques, first aid & VHF radio operators licence which are all a requirements to obtain a commercial endorsement. Alex is qualified to operate a licensed passenger boat in Irish waters up to 40 miles offshore, or from a safe haven.

Alex is also qualified as an Irish Sailing Powerboat Instructor and works with Safe Water Training delivering certified courses in the leisure and commercial industries. Alex is not only a skipper, he trains and certifies other skippers too.

Maintaining all of these qualifications and certificates in date while keeping skills up to date and maintaining his currencies takes a lot of time and effort but he says it is well worth it!

Alex is passionate about the water and grew up on Lough Corrib with boating being a huge part of his life from a very early age. His extensive knowledge of the area has been invaluable to us in developing our range of tours, fast ferry service routes and bespoke excursions.

We’re delighted to welcome our new boat to Lough Corrib for the 2025 season!

This high speed RIB (rigid inflatable boat) will give us access to the entire lake allowing us to offer our fantastic tours, private charters, bespoke excursions, fast ferry services and commercial services with even more comfort than before. With our heated cabin and individual seating, our all weather capable boat will operate all year round in comfort.

Our boat was built by who have an exceptional reputation for building world class boats that are capable of operating in the harshest of environments.

We’re looking forward to beginning our operations again from March and will be sure to bring you more updates very soon!

It was fantastic to see our beautiful Lough Corrib and Inchagoill Island on RTÉ 1 on Monday night! Scéalta na Lochanna is a 6 part series on Lough Neagh and Lough Corrib airing at 8:30pm on Monday nights.

The first episode featured quite a lot of history and showed images from the annual mass on Inchagoill. Looking forward to tuning in again on Monday night!

Well done to all involved! 👏🏻

Following on from the Powerboat Run which took place on 19th October 2024 the committee was delighted to present a cheque to Cancer Fund for Children for a total value of €2,600.00

Funds raised will be used towards build costs for Daisy Lodge 4 Mayo which is scheduled to commence in the coming months!

The committee would like to take this opportunity to thank all personnel involved and our main sponsors of the event!
