This ancient Irish site tucked away in the west of Ireland is a hidden gem on par with the famous burial sites at Newgrange and Tara. Most tourists, both Irish and international, will be unfamiliar with Rathcroghan in County Roscommon, but it used to be Ireland's ancient royal capital.

Then and now, Kilronan Castle, 1988 v 2022. What an amazing transformation this building has undergone. Built in the early 19th century by the Tenison's, it was originally known as Castle Tenison. The family remained there until the 1920's, after their departure the roof was removed and the house fell into complete dereliction (see upper photo). It was purchased by the present owners in 2004, and they undertook a massive restoration project, transforming the building into a luxury hotel, the result is extraordinary, (see lower photo). Kilronan Castle is well worth a visit. (upper photo from the IAA)
