www.doulacare.ie Who is Jen Crawford anyway? A bit of background on me…..I am a mum to two fun loving boys. I live in North Dublin with my husband Paul and our boys Seth and Leon. I always knew I wanted to be a mother. I dreamed of holding my new born and feeling complete. From the second I became a mother, I knew that was my calling in life. This is who I was meant to be. So when I was asked to v

olunteer for a charity that supports Ireland’s tiniest babies and empower their parents, I didn’t have to think too hard about it before I jumped right in. I was a Director and the Breastfeeding Coordinator for the charity Irish Premature Babies (IPB) for 3 years.Stepping down in January 2016. http://www.irishprematurebabies.com/ This has given me an intimate insight into the struggles many new parents face. Working with some of the most vulnerable babies in Ireland has really opened my eyes to the strength new parents have. I have watched hundreds of them grow from an overwhelmed parent in total shock to speaking all the medical lingo and working the monitors in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) like a pro. Many of these families will stay in my heart for as long as I live – their love, devotion and determination for their baby/babies and their superhuman strength is something I aspire to. During my time working with IPB, I have also attended many hospital workshops, meetings and action plans. I have met with health care professionals from all walks of life and gained a great understanding of hospital policies and practice surrounding birth and early parenthood. I saw first-hand the great medical care families receive but the emotional side was severely lacking. My passion was ignited from this time and I looked into things I could do to pave the way of change. I decided to become an Antenatal Teacher (to hold classes for expectant parents where we discuss pregnancy, birth and early parenthood.) but I wanted to find a course where parents were empowered and thought about informed decision making. This would leave them confident in their choices and ability to birth their baby. I found the perfect course with Cuidiu, Irish Childbirth Trust. I began my training in 2014 and my first course teaching was September 2016. These classes are parent led and are independent of all hospitals. I am also a voluntary breastfeeding counsellor with Cuidiu, Irish Childbirth Trust. This is a free service where counsellors volunteer their time in order to support breast feeding mothers in their community. I have made some great friends during these courses and look forward to each day with them www.cuidiu-ict.ie/

So I felt content that I would have the knowledge to encourage and support expectant parents, but what about creating a link with those wonderful new babies? In 2015 I decided to train as a Postnatal Doula. I have loved every second, immersing myself in all things baby. Hearing about powerful stories of birth and strength. Learning from the knowledge of all the Doulas who have come before, drawing on their wisdom and experience. In October 2015 I trained as a Birth Doula also. I went for international training with DONA www.dona.org/ and to be honest I am still on a high from both the training and positive energy from the fellow Doulas. I am also a committee member of the Doula Association of Ireland (DAI), who are celebrating 10 years in Ireland. The DAI have some amazing women in their organisation, from all different walks of life. www.doula.ie

Having so many contacts in many diverse areas to do with birth and early parenthood allows me to stay up to date with local policies and practices. It also gives me great support as I have many strong women to draw upon if I am struggling with something. They are a fountain of knowledge and I adore each and every one of them for keeping my excitement and passion about birth and early parenting alive. What do I do as a Doula? As a Postpartum Doula I provide non-medical physical and emotional support and household assistance after the birth of your baby. I can provide support to help your recovery and assist you with the care and feeding of your new baby, including breastfeeding assistance, bathing, and comfort measures. I do not take over care of your baby, but assist you in learning to care for your baby's needs yourself. I can provide childcare during naps so that parents can get some much needed rest. I will also be glad to do some light housekeeping including laundry, household organization and tidying. I also am happy to prepare snacks/meals. This is a professional service that will allow your family to thrive during those first few weeks with your baby, not just survive! Call or email me to find out more and to arrange our no obligation interview :)

I cover all of Dublin and into surrounding counties. For full services and rates please visit my website www.dublindoulajen.com

Did anyone sing during their labour? My eldest was 15 recently and I loved music during my labour and I did sing (a LOT) and found it great. Am adding a good chunk of the article here as you need to have an account to read it "Several studies have shown, for instance, that listening to music can boost well-being, reduce stress and anxiety, and even help to relieve pain. Similarly, singing itself has been associated with a reduction in pain, increased feelings of happiness by releasing endorphins, and reduced feelings of worry and sadness.

Dr. Veena Graff, an assistant professor of anesthesiology and critical care at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, said that few studies have looked into the effects of singing on the labor process specifically. But the evidence we do have on the benefits of passively listening to music during pregnancy and delivery — which “significantly reduces stress, pain and anxiety and can improve the overall satisfaction of the birthing experience,” she said — offers clues.

“Mechanistically, the act of singing helps with breathing and is a great distraction method,” Dr. Graff continued, “which in turn can relax a woman while experiencing labor pains.” Dr. Catherine Sonquist Forest, a clinical associate professor of medicine at Stanford Medicine who has taught classes on alternative approaches to anxiety and stress, echoed this idea. Stress can amplify pain, she said, so singing might relieve the stress of a laboring woman by activating the parts of her nervous system that can calm her down. “This reduces their cortisol levels, relaxes them, reduces their heart rate, reduces blood flow and allows their bodies to go with the progression of labor,” she said."https://buff.ly/3cc2oPa?

Turns out, women have been singing, chanting and humming through childbirth for centuries. But can it actually provide relief?

Cords vary in length, size, color, thickness, and some cords are quite curly while others are relatively straight. The umbilical cord has three primary functions: to carry oxygen between the

I am SO excited to share this with the parents who come to my GentleBirth workshops and with our doula clients - it is a very easy device to use and feedback so far has been over whelminging positive on how it helped during labour. We organised a training for a number of doulas that offer birth doula support through DoulaCare and there is another training next week as well so if you feel you might be interested in utilising this, do let us know so we can match you with someone who has taken the training

This looks like a very interesting piece of research that a postgraduate student at Maynooth University is conducting - if any of you have male partners or friends that would be interested in getting involved. Please do share.

"This study will explore how men experience stress, mood (anxiety & depression) and loneliness during pregnancy and following the birth of their baby. The study is interested in the role that social support plays in relation to these experiences in the context of Covid-19. What is involved? For this research I am interested in recruiting fathers to participate in an online survey that will take 10-15 minutes to complete (link below). If you decide to take part, you will be contacted at three timepoints (Prenatally in the third trimester and again at 3 and at 6 months following the birth of your baby). The survey is completely anonymous and includes demographic questions, and short questionnaire on stress, mood, loneliness, and social support.

Any questions or would like to participate in the interview you may contact me via email – [email protected]"

Sharing this here because I know the worry of breastfeeding and dental cavities comes up sometimes (I know it was blamed on my daughters teeth issues!). Nice to see research stating that it's not the case and in fact can help reduce them:

Recent research finds children who were exclusively breastfed for 6 months were 28% less likely to have dental tooth decay, cavities, or toothaches compared to children who were never breastfed.

Trigger warning for birth trauma and babies with health issues:
This is such a good read - we support and meet women and pregnant people that are left so scarred and upset with a traumatic birth. "It is a helpless and terrifying feeling to be in labor and know that nobody is listening to you. No matter how educated you are on the process, when something unexpected happens, you need to feel that your medical professionals are tuned into your needs and wishes. When you feel ignored and discarded, that fear and pain can last well beyond the birth."

My traumatic birth left me feeling raw, exposed, violated and devastated.
