I've been missing in action, and I haven't really had the time to share on social media and share Ireland's rich heritage with you. I apologise for that, but I have a good reason - my MA thesis. So, I returned to university to finish my MA thesis. It's full-on at the moment, researching, sending questionnaires, and writing.

My thesis explores the representation of women in walking tours and the use of walking and storytelling as learning tools. Rebecca Solnit's Wanderlust: A History of Walking is a joy to read and gives such insight into walking culture and its history.

As my thesis is my main priority right now, I will only be popping on here now and again until I finish it. But I'm still conducting tours, and there are plenty of articles to read on my website if you have an interest in Irish cultural heritage ☘️

Beannachtaí na Cásca oraibh!

It's Easter weekend and a Bank Holiday Weekend here in Ireland.

Of course, anyone celebrating this time of year knows the cross is an important symbol. Pictured below is a High Cross from the Clonmacnoise monastic site in Co. Offaly.

The High Cross is considered to be one of the greatest artistic achievements of the early Middle Ages in Ireland. These spectacular stone monuments have captured our imaginations for centuries and have remained as iconic cultural landmarks on the Irish landscape.

Created by the Irish monastic community, these high crosses first appeared on the Irish landscape from around the ninth century and continued into the twelfth century. The coming of the Anglo-Normans marked the end of the High Cross tradition in Ireland.

As symbols of Christianity, these crosses were venerated, but they also had educational value. They were used to convey a particular idea or a message from the Bible in visual form. Much of the complex imagery found on Irish High Crosses was aimed at a knowledgeable audience rather than the less informed lay congregation.

The 250 or so monuments that still survive on the Irish landscape today hold a special significance. They act as a constant reminder of our unique artistic past and of Ireland’s outstanding contribution to art, architecture and education.

Yes!

As a tourist guide, I love sharing the culture and heritage of Galway city, and fostering curiosity and connection with the people I meet on my walking tours. I also love sharing Ireland's cultural heritage as a whole.

Tourist guides really do bring a destination to life.

For years, filmmakers and directors have flocked to Ireland to use its beautiful scenery as a backdrop for some of their productions. There has been a long tradition of the Irish in Hollywood, with talent such as Maureen O'Hara, Liam Neeson, Saoirse Ronan and Cillian Murphy, to name but a few. But Ireland has also produced some of its own cinematic gems that have influenced many to visit this fair isle, and a few are must-watch.

Read the following article👉 https://bit.ly/3FW67Dk for a short list of must-watch Irish films.

What are your favourite Irish films? What Irish films should I add to the list?

Galway has a long and rich maritime history from the Claddagh fishing village to the 14 Tribes developing trading ties with France, Flanders, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Newfoundland and the West Indies during the 14th and 15th centuries, to today with tender boats and private boats mooring in the docks ⚓️

We Irish love to put a twist on things, and the English language is no different. Our dialect of English, Hiberno-English, results in unusual words and phrases. This can be difficult for visitors to understand. I've put together a few examples of Irishisms to help you on your travels while in Ireland. Click on the link below to read the article☘️
