Kathleen Curran grew up on College Road in Galway city. In 1938 she began work as a clerk typist with the Galway Harbour Commissioner. In1951 she was picked to be harbour master temporarily and she stayed in that role until 1953. She's credited as being Ireland's first female harbour master. At the beginning of the week we received the sad news of the death of a Galway icon, Judy Greene, of Judy Greene's Pottery on Kirwan's Lane.

Judy Greene's Pottery was established in 1982 in the heart of medieval Galway specialising in hand-thrown terracotta, depicting Irish flora and landscape. It has been a favourite among tourists and locals alike wanting a special and unique gift.

The amazing St. Nicholas' Collegiate Church in Galway city is the largest medieval parish in Ireland that's still in continuous use as a place of worship and dates back to 1320. Hear more about this church on the Medieval Galway Tour.

Galway's Christmas market is kicking off today with the Big Wheel, carousel, and stalls full of Christmas goodies returning. Running until the 5th of January 2025, get down there in the next few weeks and soak up the Christmas atmosphere with a nice hot chocolate or mulled wine 🎄

Lily McAllister was found on the streets of Cavan as a child and she was charged with begging for alms. She was sent to a local orphanage and put to work on a farm. She didn't like working on the farm so she ran back to the orphanage she was in. At this stage she was 16 years old and deemed too old to stay in the orphanage, and so she was sent to the Magdalene Laundry on Forster Street in Galway city.
