On this, the shortest day of the year, let us take a moment to celebrate the indigenous architecture that directly connects us with the incredible monuments of our distant past.
These unassuming little houses (with cultural and construction adaptations through the centuries) are among the last extant components of a continuum that connects the island's ancient druidic civilisation with the vibrant outward looking Ireland of today.
No other architecture fulfils this role.
As such, these humble little houses are irreplaceable, and surely worthy of inclusion in our winter solstice celebrations.
