Last trip of the year for Paschal and the lads. Cold north wind with middling fishing. Tunas all around but we stayed at the ground fishing, in spite of there being a good chance of hooking one. The average age of the crew had nothing to do with that.

What a day of rain. The wind did all points except SW. At last we are going in. Middling fishing but lovely birds, 4 types of shearwaterr swirling around in the mist and rain.
I left my coffe thermos at home. Sue who almost singlehanded runs our BnB brought it to Cleggan before I even realised I’d forgotten it. She was a good catch.

The only time ive seen a Corys before 2023 was on holidays in El Hierro in the Canaries. In the last 2 years ive seen hundreds off the connemara coast.

What changed their habits?

Last year we also had lots of Porbeagle Sharks. We always got a small handful but they were here in numbers in 2023. Other parts of the coastline have quite a lot, The Arann Islands in particular and they are only 40 milers away. I wondered if the Corys and the Porbeagles were brought by the same thing but so far this year i havnt come across any Porgies. They are attracted to the struggling fish and will steal the fish off your line if they can sometimes right in front of you. They are a great angling species related to the Mako and Great White, pure predators with bristling teeth and eyes right at the front, unlike their lazier cousins the Blue Shark who are more scavengers.

These are pics of Corys Shearwaters which I took on a trip out with Johnny King the other day.

It’s a bit late but today 28 April 24 is my first day out. When I started in 1991 I had the boat out and ready for Paddies day. Today We are heading to the Barrett Shoals at 18 kts. Back then the destination was the same but the speed was 6 kts. I’d swap the speed for the fish we got back then any day . Now I’ve all kinds of electronic gadgets that ensure we never drop a line in the wrong place, then I had a Decca Navigator which gave a middling accurate lat long and if you could set a drift that kept the 2 towers of slyne head in line the fishing would be good.
It looks a bit grey and empty today but will find out shortly!

I may have retired from the RNLI but still mad keen to go fishing. Should have a well polished boat back in the water in a couple of weeks.

John Brittain, Clifden RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager has made the decision to retire after 14 years in the role and we all send him our deepest appreciation for his guidance and support over the years. Anyone who has come across John in his many years with Clifden lifeboat crew will know him as a straight talking and level headed person who is driven to do the right thing. He is also very kind hearted, good craic and an excellent leader.

Over 30 years voluntary service with Clifden RNLI and responsible for leading us through huge developments at the station including securing our brand new Shannon class lifeboat, St Christopher. He has held multiple roles including Helm on the old C Class, Atlantic 21, Atlantic 75 and D class lifeboats followed by a number of years as Launching Authority.

The role of LOM involves overseeing the operation of the station, crew and lifeboats and as a fully voluntary position it can come with significant personal sacrifice. We thank John sincerely for the time, commitment, energy and guidance he has provided over the years. Thank you for the all the training exercises, rescues, operation meetings and events you have managed. We will miss you Wesley but send you the very best wishes for your next chapter. 🩵

nice fishing on Wednesday out off Clare island with a group from Athlone. Not a sign of a porbeagle though in spite of steady stream of fish coming up to the boat. Back North of Inishboffin today Thursday with a lot less fish on the ground we had another Porbeagle. Feisty fish with a feisty NW breeze but the master on the rod so all was well.!

Lots of fish about this year including Porbeagles. Not one we get to often but I was alerted to them being about yesterday when an absolute whopper swiped a po***ck off a line. Went out for a look with the right gear today and had 4 runs and this small one 70 lbs? to the boat.

Some lovely days last week with Jelle and Willem Zikkenheiner and Dominc Lautier who have been fishing with me since the early 1990's. Beautiful weather and only 4 or 5 anglers on board we fishing on the deep reefs. Loads of feed around, whales dolphins and birds all pigging it and the fish getting a much needed boost. Po***ck way up off the bottom with full stomachs. Great days.
