From blue whales to beluga and humpback whales to Hector’s dolphins; we organise unique holidays to remote locations like the Pacific lagoons of Baja California Sur in Mexico to the coastal waters of Maui in the Hawaiian archipelago and the bleak and windswept Peninsular Valdés in Argentina. Nic Slocum (founder and director of Whales World Wide) has been organising small group wildlife expeditions and excursions to some of the world’s remotest regions for over 25 years. From six month trans Saharan expeditions to the wildlife diverse Benue River region of the Cameroons to the remote Pacific coast of Mexico to watch and film Gray Whales, Nic has been excursion leader and organiser. A zoologist by training, Nic Slocum has an abiding concern for the natural world and the pressure it is under as world human population increases. He firmly believes that meaningful conservation objectives are better served by increasing awareness through carefully managed wildlife tourism.

Migaloo (Aboriginal for 'white fella') is the only known all-white humpback whale in the world. Marc had photographed him at sea level but knew that the way to get the perfect portrait would be from the air. He had already made three attempts, on days when the water was too rough to capture the white whale against the white-capped waves.

On hearing that a tour boat had spotted Migaloo off Green Island, in the far north of Queensland, Marc chartered a helicopter to take him directly to the spot. 'On this day the water was almost smooth,' he says. 'I clicked the shutter as Migaloo took one last breath and disappeared like a giant ghost into the depths.' Migaloo belongs to the eastern Australian humpback population that is thought to total about 15,000 - still way below half the number that existed before commercial whaling began.

We were in Maui this year when this animal was doing this behaviour. It is observed widely in Southern Right whales in Argentina but we think this is the first time this behaviour has been seen in humpbacks!
