While not a site of historical importance per-se, we can't neglect the heritage of The Quiet Man.
Shot in 1952, John Ford's adaptation of Maurice Walshes short story brought global recognition to the small and beautiful town of Cong, Co.Mayo.

The film tells of an Irish born retired boxer, played by John Wayne, who travels back to Ireland to buy his old family home.
Receiving many Academy Awards & Nominations it has also been labeled by the United States National Film Registry as being a film of cultural significance.

Being aware of the sensitive nature of some topics at the time, John enlisted the help of Ernie O'Malley, a commander of the Irish Republican Army during the Irish Civil War of 1922-1923 who was also a keen author.

Today it’s the site of a museum where you can see an extremely detailed reproduction of the original set.

On Tory Island, off the north coast of Donegal, you’ll find a 12th century Tau cross. It is one of only two to be found in Ireland! Commonly known as St. Anthony’s Cross, given their association with St. Anthony of Egypt, these unique crosses are more commonly found in North Africa.

Eaglais Mhuire (St. Mary's Church) in Kilkenny is one if Ireland's most historic National Monument sites, with evidence to suggest it has been a place of worship for over 2000 years.

The present day church began construction in 1255 on commission by Edmund Butler with the purpose that mass would be held for himself, his wife and children and all his ancestors living and dead.

St. Mary's is also the site of the moderately preserved Gowran Ogham stone which was "Christianised" in the 6th century with a prominent cross being carved on its base.

On this day 83 years ago in 1938, Fort Dunree on the northern coast of Donegal was the last British fort handed back to the Irish free state by British forces in accordance with the Anglo-Irish treaty.

It was written in The Times that "The ceremony was witnessed by only a dozen spectators" and in a somewhat poetic handover, Sergeant O'Flynn of the British Royal Artillary who took down the Union Jack and Sargeant McLaughlin of the Eire force who hoisted the Irish Tricolour were brothers in law"

Lambay Island off the coast of Dublin might be small but its history is mighty.

So much so that the great Roman Ptolemy wrote about it in his Geography in AD 150 calling it Εδρου (possibly translating as "Base of Ships").

Not only that but did you know Lambay was the site of the first Norse attack in 795?

The Tacumshane (Teach Coimseáin) Windmill in Wexford is Ireland's last commercially operated windmill.

Built in 1846 it remained in service until 1936 and is unique for its rotating straw thatch top.
In place of watermills, which needed fast-moving rivers to operate, the Normans used vertical tower windmills such as this, which were just as effective at grinding grain without the logistics of building on a river.

Thanks to its flat and windy environment, South Wexford was studded with these unique buildings during the middle ages.

It was designated a national monument in 1952.

Athenry Abbey was founded in 1241 by Meyler de Bermingham with support from Feidlim Ua Conchobair, King of Connaught.

Although Meyler is buried here, he was none too liked by the Nuns with the Abbess Orla of Kilcreevanty commenting in 1308 that he regularly entered the abbey with men and horses and seized goods of substantial value.
