Cregduff, Cloonboo, Co. Galway.
Cregduff is a forestry plantation approx 110 acres in size. About 30 years ago, this former bogland was planted with conifers for economic purposes.
Mainly a coniferous plantation, there is a sprinkling of native deciduous trees; ash, alder, sycamore; and a good amount of hedgerows, comprising of blackthorn, hawthorn and bramble.
Situated in Cloonboo, Co. Galway ( 7 miles from Galway city ), it sits alongside the Cregg river flowing into Lough Corrib. Surrounding habitats include heather-strewn bogland, wide areas of uncultivated grassland, limestone-paved meadows and wetlands.
The area has a rich biodiversity of wildlife, with approx 90 species of birds, 28 of our 35 species of butterflies, most of our terrestrial mammals and a huge number of insects.
The area is home to some wonderful flowers, including the beautiful Spring Gentian, a flower more synonymous with the Burren. Several species of Orchid can be found here, as well as the Marsh Helleborine.
There is a series of trails through the plantation, with several vantage points for viewing this hidden gem.
Cregduff is a nature wonderland just waiting to be discovered.!
