Great to have attended the opening of the display of the Red Book of Ossory at St Canices Cathedral Kilkenny. This is so exciting to now have this book in Kilkenny. Well done to all involved at St Canices Cathedral.

Some great events in St Canices Cathedral due to its new display of the 'Red Book of Ossory' as seen in picture above.

The 14th century book was developed by the cathedrals Bishop Le Drede at the time. This book is but a stones throw from the Medieval Mile Museum where you will find a book called the Liber Primus. Both extremely important books from its times. All we need now is my ultimate wish and that's the book of Pottlerath which is held in Bodleian Library. Kilkenny would then hold some of the rarest books in Ireland.

I will definitely be booking myself in for Dr John Gillis lecture. His conservation expertise is rare and he developed the conservation plan for the Red book. I believe three stands were specifically designed to hold the book over the year on display at the Cathedral.

The Knights Templars

Did you know that William Marshall who built Kilkenny Castle and established St Marys Church was a volunteer Knights Templar. If he were to actually become a templar he would have had to become a monk. This would not have enabled him to marry out Irish Princess Isabel de Clare. Which he eventually went on to do. Even so his connections were close to the templars as in death he was and is buried in the famous Temple church in London . His stone effigy is in prime position along side his son. I often wonder if Kilkenny is holding alot more secrets about the templars and one of their favourite characters who essentially started the establishment of Kilkenny as a walled medieval city. There are indications of templar symbolism around in the city, maybe from aspiring individuals wishing to show connection or admiration. Just a thought.

St Michans Church, Dublin ,Ireland.
Here lies an unplanned preservation of the dead .
The original church was built for settled Vikings who were banished to this part of Dublin in 1095 . This church has gone on to hold many stories throughout the centuries.

It was a Catholic church until the reformation where it was occupied by the new church. St Michans became a church for the upper class in the area and beyond. Some of the Earl's of Leitrim are buried in the churches vault .

There is a great collection of the dead amazingly preserved due to the dry atmosphere within the vault. Many oak coffins are still intact. But the four most interesting up to now are open due to natural breakage allowing all to see.

One mummy is of a crusader over 800years old. He is six and a half feet tall. His legs were broken to fit into his coffin.
The next is a robber who eventually became a priest. His leg and hand is severed.
There is also a nun buried here and an unknown lady.
All in the making for a horror movie for some. An archaeological heaven for others. A historical mystery for most.

Bram Stoker who worked and lived nearby spent some time at the vault and its thought he gained must inspiration for his book "Dracula" here.
Also the Shearer brothers lie here after being hanged for their involvement in the Irish movement during the revolution in Ireland.

Moving into the church we see a beautiful church organ . The organ is the oldest in Ireland . It is believed that Handel played the Messiah on it for the very first time . The organ has manifested to what it is today and parts are original.

So if you are ever visiting Dublin this spot is a hidden treasure often over looked by large coach tours . If you are looking for the real hidden stories of Ireland . St Michans is definitely a name to be listed on your journey. You will not be disappointed.
