Did you know, the Irish tradition of women proposing on Leap Year can be traced all the way back to the 5th century. According to Irish folklore, St. Brigid of Kildare bitterly complained to St. Patrick that women had to wait far too long for men to propose!

Legend says Patrick declared women could propose on this one day in February during the Leap Year. The tradition was then taken to Scotland by Irish monks, where it was eventually written into law in 1288.

The Scots passed a law that allowed a woman to propose marriage to the man of their dreams on a Leap Year, with the law also stating that any man who declined the proposal on this day would have to pay a fine.

The fine could range from a kiss to payment for a silk dress or a pair of gloves!

Celebrating love, loyalty, and friendship this Valentine's Day with the Irish tradition of timeless Claddagh Ring💍

Originating from the fishing village of Claddagh in Galway, Ireland, it symbolises the enduring bond between two hearts, hands for friendship and crown for loyalty.

The tradition of how to wear your Claddagh Ring is very distinctive. If the owner of the ring wears it with the crown pointing towards the finger nail, he or she is said to be in love or married. To wear the ring with heart pointing away from the finger nail, he or she is said to be unattached to anyone.

Whatever the Claddagh Ring means to you, it remains one of Ireland's most enduring symbols of connection, love and unity.

Tommy describes it perfectly 🙂

POITIN/POTEEN. ( think moonshine)
Poitin or Poteen can be translated as 'little pot' in Irish and refers to the small, illicit stills by which it was traditionally produced.

GAS STATIONS TIPS IN IRELAND☘

These may be simple tips, but they're useful ones we like to repeat to our cousins time and time again:

1 - ☘In Ireland, you fuel up your car at "Petrol Stations", rather than Gas stations.

2 - ☘In almost all locations, you pump the fuel yourself. Fuel up first, then go inside to pay. Some petrol stations do have an option to pay by card at the pump but this is not widespread.

3 - ☘While a lot of rental cars will take diesel, if you're unsure, the fuel type is always displayed inside the fuel flap.

4 - ☘Prices on the pump are total retail price, no local taxes are added at the sale point.

5 - ☘And lastly, but most importantly❗❗
⚫Black pump for Diesel.
🟢Green pump for Petrol.

Today, February 1st, we celebrate St. Brigid, St. a beloved and revered figure in Irish culture.

We are all familiar with the her feast day marking various traditions, including the crafting of St. Brigid's Crosses, acts of charity, and celebrations of Irish heritage.

But there are many sides to Brigid; here are are some lesser known facts about the female patron saint of Éire:

Daughter Of A Pagan Chieftain:

Brigid was the daughter of Dubhthach, the pagan chieftain of Leinster and her mother, Broicsech, was a Christian. It was thought that Brigid's mother was born in Portugal but was kidnapped by Irish pirates and brought to Ireland to work as a slave, just like St. Patrick was.

St Brigid: The Goddess:

In Irish mythology, Brigid was associated with the Celtic goddess Brigid, who was linked to healing, poetry, and craftsmanship. This blending of Christian and pagan elements is characteristic of the complex cultural history of Ireland.

The Protector of Animals:

St. Brigid was a true animal lover, earning her the title of the "Mary of the Gaels." Legend has it that she could even calm the wildest of beasts with just a touch.

The Cloak of Compassion:

Brigid asked the King of Leinster for land to build her monastery. He mocked and said he would grant her whatever land her cloak would cover. St Brigid performed her most famous miracle, with her the small cloak expanding to cover acres. The amazed King became her patron, supporting the monastery. Eventually, he converted to Christianity.

St Brigid's Cloth:

On St. Brigid's Day, it's a tradition in Ireland to leave out a piece of cloth for Brigid to bless. Placing this blessed cloth on your doorstep is believed to bring prosperity and keep hunger at bay.

You know… it’s not about us, it’s about you!

My Irish Cousin was founded in 2016 by Malachy Quinn. What started out as a one-man operation is quickly growing into a team of Irish Cousins.

Malachy Quinn is a native Dubliner and started his career in the Irish financial sector. This is where he quickly uncovered his entrepreneurial streak. This led him to the UK to take up an opportunity to develop an international construction equipment business. This business took him all over the world for 20 years. With travelling so much, Malachy soon learned to recognise and appreciate excellent standards of service. In particular, the difference a genuine welcome makes. More recently, Malachy has held a number of leadership roles on boards of management. He has also become increasingly involved in the hospitality industry and is also an Airbnb Superhost.

Malachy has identified the need for an all-in-one service which combines being personal tour guide, concierge, driver and minder. He saw an opening for offering more flexible, bespoke and personalised tours

around Ireland. Recalling his own first trip to the UK in the 1980s to visit an older Irish cousin he remembers vividly the feeling of being welcomed warmly and being shown around by someone genuine, local and friendly.
