04/03/2022

Late winter, the Pride of Place judges reviewed a set of actions, a decade in the making, that created a looped walk in Fore. They heard a 20-minute presentation from Cllr Frank McDermott, Jane O’Reilly, Una D’Arcy and Patrick D’Arcy detailing work to cre...

In 1947, James McDermott won an NEIS German Nikon camera at a Pole Vaulting competition in Phoenix Park. He brought along the next day to capture a project he and his friends had committed to in their spare time; they were going to save Fore Abbey from a herd of Feral Goats that were breaking the walls and clean it up so people could visit it.
Sixty years later, the children of this Meitheal would meet to form the Fore Heritage and Amenity Group, a committee of volunteers that are now responsible for the development and upkeep of a 3km looped walk that attracts nearly 100,000 visitors to Fore and to the benefit of North Westmeath.

Heritage is a key component of our tourism work in Fore. Westmeath County Council's Heritage officer Melanie is an amazing support to us and is a regular visitor, advisor and always willing to go the extra mile- like when we hiked off through some forestry in search of new places to develop and found a geocache.

So; it's coming around again- Best foot FORE ward- you see what I did there :D - I'll get my coat.

Seriously- we were thrilled to bring an award home to Fore that celebrated how amazing our community is and the work of the extraordinary Annette Barr Jordan and the the Community Section of Westmeath County Council.

Community Development is crucial and its just as important as planning, engineering, building and all the tangible functions that a council carries out.

For those working in community development they are often planting trees under whose shade they may never sit.

So when we get the opportunity to say 'THANKS' lets not waste it- so before the competition gets under way- Thanks to Annette, Ann-Marie, Brigid, Mary and to the DOS Barry Keogh and to Westmeath County Council who always do their best to support community work with funding, expertise and kindness.

We are so thrilled to have been selected by Westmeath County Council to represent 'Tourism' and Community in the 2020 pride of Place competition.

Fore has been so busy this year with people travelling from all over the country to visit our amazing looped walk.

But its not an over night success; our community has been working hard for decades to create an amenity that benefits the community and creates a 'place' in a tangible way that can be promoted.

So our thanks to everyone that works with us to promote Fore and welcome visitors; and good luck to Fore Heritage and Amenity group who will be putting their best foot forward next week.
