The School Expedition Programme: Campfire 🔥 🏕️ 🥾 *Read Below*

One of our favourite parts of the trip, the campfire 🔥 . This really is an amazing experience for guides, teachers and students! It's funny how things take on a life of their own around the campfire.

We facilitate every aspect of the trip, but during the campfire we take a step back. It's fantastic seeing the group dynamics of the students and how confusion can turn into story telling, sing songs and more! We need more of this in life.

Students embracing sunset on the School Expedition Programme. 🌄 🏕️ 🥾 *Read Below*

The school expedition programme is a unique wilderness experience run across Ireland. It gives students the much-needed opportunity to connect with nature and experience a different way of life, even if only for 36 hours.

We supply each student with their own tent and backpack and supply all the food and equipment needed for their trip. We even go into the school prior to the trip, teaching students how to use the equipment and answer any of the questions they have.

This is a great way to get students out and connected with nature, as well as offering them a alternative view on education as a whole.

Did you know that the deer in Glendalough are a mixture of both Irish deer and a deer from an Island off the coast of South-East Asia? 🤯 😱 Trying to flex to his mates, Lord Powerscourt brought over Sika Deer from the Island in 1860. Inevitably they broke loose and do what deer do best, mating with the locals and blending and becoming part of the larger habitat.

Unfortunately, deer have become an issue for our mountainous landscape, as they exceed the holding capacity that the mountains have for such a species without a natural predator. In the past, wolves were the main predator, but the last remaining wolf in the country was shot on the Blackstairs over 237 years ago. This resulted in a behavioural change in deer and in turn has resulted in over grazing of the landscape. Due to this, humans have had to step in and maintain order in the mountains, making sure that the deer population is kept under control in the hope of retaining what we have.

If you'd like to find out more, then why not book onto our Glendalough Night Hike and History Tour, where we will entertain you with many tales of Glendalough and The Wicklow Mountains.

The Green Isle ☘️ ⛰️ Makes for a fantastic place to learn and hone your navigation skills. 🗺️

I've gone on to climb and mountaineer around the world, from mountains in Africa to mountaineering in the French Alps. All of these skills were leaned and developed around the mountains of Ireland! If you want to start your journey, then drop us a DM 🤙

Did you know??? That Ireland was the world's first county to be mapped entirely at large scale 🌍 ! It was completed by the Ordnance Survey in 1841 and was created for reasons you might not expect! 🧐

The mapping of the land was actually done for land evaluation and taxation purposes. Prior to this, Ireland used a taxation system known as the "County Cess". The British declared that this system was unusable and so Ordnance Survey was authorised to map the entire country to help

taking in the Glendalough valley. This photo was taken on one of our first tours together. Patrick came on board for what was meant to be two hikes, but ended up staying for the season!

The Glendalough Night Hike & History Tour would not be what it is today without his input and knowledge, brining his unique humor and love for nature to the tour!

If you're looking for anything ecology, then this in your man!
