We have yet to survey a site in the past two years where Ash trees are present and unaffected by Ash Dieback. The preference is always to specify and retain, where possible, native plant material that is already present on the site or in the surrounding landscape.
In the case of Ash trees alternatives have to be specified. These alternatives are usually Birch, Rowan or trees that suit the specific site. Ash trees are often key constituents to what makes up the landscape character of a specific site.
You can't help but feel that the replacement of one species for another, even though it is best practice, has a negative impact on the character of a site where the dominant tree species has to be removed. This is a really worthwhile project and outlines the important work of state bodies and key stakeholders working in the environmental sphere in Ireland.
A new forestry research project, AshforFuture, aimed at preserving and reviving ash trees in Ireland, was officially launched today
