The Richard Russell Fountain at The People's Park in Limerick. It was erected in 1877 and was a working drinking fountain for those enjoying the park. Incredibly ornate, it was restored in 2009 and it is one of just 2 (or possibly 3?) in the country. The People's Park has a fascinating history, you should check it out!

"Whether at home or abroad, I will never forget the very kind manner I was received in Limerick" - having spent two weeks in the city as part of a four month stay in , these were just some of his own thoughts on the experience. Frederick Douglass is known to have given an inspirational speech at what is now on Bedford Row. had active links to the slave trade with merchant families involved in their transportation from the West Indies, but with this there were also mass antislavery protests in Limerick including a boycott of products related to slavery, including sugar. “Oh what a transition it was to be changed from the state of a slave to that of a free man!” He said, summing up his stay "Whether at home or abroad, I will never forget the very kind manner I was received in Limerick" - having spent two weeks in the city as part of a four month stay in Ireland, these were just some of his own thoughts on the experience. William III needed to secure a fortified crossing of the River Shannon to suffer a decisive blow on the Irish Jacobite Army, he needed to take Limerick. Before he arrived with a huge army to begin the siege, the Jacobite defenders inside the city received word that heavy artillery was amassing outside of the city. Patrick Sarsfield slipped out of Limerick at midnight on August 10th 1690 with a number of cavalry. He rode as fast as he could up to ClareCastle, Bridgetown and across to Killaloe. He had now over 500 horseback troops with him. He was aided by a man from Doon named Daniel “Galloping” Hogan who knew the area intimately. Aided by Hogan, Sarsfiled led the entire force along the Silvermine Mountains and down the west side of Keeper Hill. The Williamite forces camped in Ballyneety outside Limerick City had bedded in for the night. When a sentry heard the approach of oncoming horses, he shouted 'Who goes there?" Sarsfield himself was first through the darkness and shouted ‘Sarsfield is the word, and Patrick Sarsfield is the man.’! Carnage ensued and Sarsfield gave the order for the huge artillery train to be blown sky high. Galloping Hogan was given the honor of lighting the fuse and the explosion was believed to be the loudest ever heard across the country. This statue will hopefully be some day located in Limerick City Centre.
