We need your help please.
We have always been proud to be a self sufficient Volunteer museum, the first in Ireland to achieve the official accreditation standards. Covid and post-covid energy prices have put us under immense financial strain but we have steadied the ship. We have opened a GoFundMe to raise the money for electricity / gas bills which are €5,000 for last two months. We have a survival and growth plan. You can help four ways, 1, donate a few euro to the go fund me, 2, come visit the museum for a tour €8 and put a few bucks in the donation box, 3, Join the Old Drogheda Society €15 a year. The ODS run the museum and this is our 50th year anniversary 4, we would love a have a website to advertise us.
Here’s the link to the GoFundMe

Drogheda Clockmakers Tour with Des Grant.

Just to let people know next week during the Boyne Valley Trails September Walking Festival. Des Grant will give a ‘once off’ walking tour of the the history of clockmaking and watchmaking in Drogheda.

While ‘we’ invented timekeeping at Newgrange 5,000 years ago the thriving modern mechanical watchmaking and clockmaking manufacturing industry began in the town in 1766 and has continued until recent times.

The town boasted dozens of makers including the famous Parker grandfather clocks and the spectacular Albert & Co grandfather clocks that were made in the town. I like to tell story of Henry Hamilton the watchmaker who acquired the treasured Tara Brooch at his shop on lower Laurence Street in 1850 before selling it in Dublin. He’ll reveal the shop and its history.

Moving from street to street, he will stop at the original shops where the clockmakers worked and lived and will bring their stories back to life.

Finishing at the Tholsel clock and I’ll will tell the many dramatic and humorous stories behind its 150-year-old.

He will be doing this on 21st September so watch for details in the advert in new Tuesday’s Drogheda Leader. Bookings at www.Boynevalleytrails.ie The Boyne Valley Walking festival sees Anthony Murphy Dusty Flannigan, Brendan Matthews and others promote Drogheda in a week of tours ( including the Jameson Whiskey tour in the backlanes).

BOYNE VALLEY TRAILS Boyne Valley Trails are a Drogheda based voluntary group supported by Boyne Valley Walking, the Love Drogheda Business Improvement District, and Failte Ireland. We want to share the beauty, heritage and culture of Ireland’s ancient Boyne Valley, through a series of bespoke walks...

John Jameson is back in Drogheda with a whiskey tour on Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20th September, 7-30pm.

Imagine, you could step back in time to 1820, and join the legendary John Jameson, the founder of Jameson Whiskey on a walking tour of Drogheda, where he once owned a Jameson distillery.

Listen to his life story as he strolls past his five-storey stone malthouses, corn stores, and his prestigious family home in the town centre.

The distillery was in production for 150 years until it closed in 1968 by which time it produced Prestons 10 (Jameson whiskey).

Company founder John Jameson lived in a beautiful Georgian House in Drogheda at the gates of his distillery, as did his children and grandchildren who were born in the town.

Author, historian and journalist Des Grant takes on the character and persona of John Jameson and leads guests through the streets of the town and tells the fascinating story of how he (John Jameson) built a world empire from the Boyneside town while also having a distillery in Dublin.

Please note: this tour is strictly over 18 only.
The Boyne Valley Trails September Walking Festival is sponsored by Failte Ireland and supported by Love Drogheda BID (Business Improvement District-Drogheda ratepayers).

Des Grant of the Old Drogheda Society and Millmount Museum is giving a lecture on ‘Clockmakers and Watchmakers of Drogheda’ in Governor's House in Millmount on Thursday 4th May.
Drogheda’s clockmaking industry began in 1766 when Charles Adams began building clocks on West Street and nearly twenty grandfather clock makers were based in the town up until the early 1900s.
Des who Editor of Drogheda Leader Newspaper and is a director of Millmount Museum will tell the stories behind an industry where Drogheda had an international reputation.
Those attending will hear about Richard Parker and Albert & Co clockmakers and others like Henry Hamilton who famously acquired the Tara Brooch while at No 2 Laurence Street and sold it on not knowing its true value.
The history of German families; the Rombachs, Wehrleys and the Duffners who settled in the town will also be revealed, along with the Drogheda firm who made watches for the British officers in the First World War.

JAMESON TOUR.

The Drogheda Jameson whiskey history tour
Imagine, you could step back in time to 1820, and join the legendary John Jameson, the founder of Jameson Whiskey on a walking tour of Drogheda, where he once owned a Jameson distillery, five-storey stone malthouses, corn stores, and kept a prestigious family home in the town centre which still stands.
Des very much becomes the character of John Jameson for the tour to add to the authenticity, dressed in a bowler hat, overcoat and cane, he strolls you through the back streets and lanes pointing out the many buildings ‘he’ once owned in the town and telling stories with a rich sense of pride and humour.
As, Mr Jameson, he will show you the stunning malthouses, his stone kilns, his majestic grain stores, and where the distillery once stood, and tell the Drogheda Jameson story as he goes pointing out the houses where the Jameson family resided, and the pubs they owned.
The tour is not scripted, the stories and the route vary each time he does it.
It is as if you somehow found yourself in the company of John Jameson as he weaves his way through the town's back lanes reminiscing and telling stories of his life, while he lived and worked in the town in the early 1800s.
You will be filled with anecdotes as he recalls with passion and with delight the places he once worked in and the magic that made it all work.
It is as if somehow Jameson’s spirit has come back to us.
The Jameson family owned several pubs in the town too, and in one a bar seat is permanently reserved for ‘The Boss’ who stepped out one day and never returned.
Old Mr Jameson likes to visit his bar at the end of his tour and he will often stand a round for those in his company and toast the people who made Irish whiskey the greatest in the world.
