We’re kicking off Heritage Week 2024 with two new exhibitions - a photographic exhibit as well as an exhibit that celebrates the literary traditions associated with the O’Flahertys and Aughnanure Castle. This is an extra special year for us as Aughnanure Castle first officially opened its doors to the public in 1974, fifty years ago.

The photographic exhibition highlights the painstaking restoration of the castle by the Office of Public Works (OPW) during the 1960s and 1970s. Some of the earliest known photos and sketches ever taken at Aughnanure are on display as well as a collection of photos from the National Monuments Service - Archaeology Photographic Unit’s archive. The Photographic Unit records conservation works at national monuments, and maintains its collection of photographs of sites and monuments, recording their condition and conservation works.

Selected images from this photographic archive will be on display, allowing members of the public to witness and appreciate the the work of the Photographic Unit in cataloguing this heritage.

While the photo exhibition runs through the upper floors, the ground floor is dedicated to the literary traditions associated with the O’Flaherty lords of Iarchonnacht, offering a fresh and alternative perspective on the renowned “ferocious” O’Flaherty reputation, reflecting their recognition of the arts during the destruction of their Gaelic world.

Included in this exhibit is a very special manuscript written at Aughnanure Castle in the mid seventeenth century by Gaelic scholar Daibhidh Ó Dubhgennain. This manuscript contains the earliest written example of the well known tale of The Pursuit of Diarmaid and Gráinne from the Ossianic / Fianna Cycle of Irish Mythology. This epic romantic tale was written while Daibhidh Ó Dubhgennain was under the patronage of Ruairi Son of Tadhg Óg O’Flaherty in 1651.

Also on display is a page from the the most renowned text produced by a Gaelic school of medicine - the Book of Hy-Brasil or the Book of the O’Lees, compiled during the fifteenth century. These types of medical texts were reference handbooks for practising physicians. The O’Lees were among the leading Gaelic physicians in Connacht and hereditary physicians to the O’Flaherty lords of Iarchonnacht, who sponsored the compiling of the book.

Some samples of the writings of celebrated seventeenth century author and historian, Roderick O’Flaherty and folklore associated with Aughnanure and the O’Flahertys are also on display.

All are welcome!

Both exhibitions will run until Sunday, August 25th.

Admission is free on August 17 & 18 only. Normal admission fees apply from August 19th.
