The reason why the fast of the 17th of Tammuz was set on this specific date, despite the fact that the Book of Jeremiah mentions the breaching of Jerusalem's walls on the 9th of Tammuz, is due to a later historical event. The sages of the Talmud set the fast date on the 17th of Tammuz because it marks the breaching of Jerusalem's walls by the Roman army during the destruction of the Second Temple.
The choice of this date is based on the fact that the second destruction was closer to the time of the sages and was perceived as a more significant catastrophe. The mourning over the Second Temple's destruction was still vivid and present in their period, making it natural for them to choose this date for the fast.
The destruction of the First Temple, caused by Nebuchadnezzar II, king of Babylon, in 586 BCE, also marked the fall of the independent Kingdom of Judah. The Book of Jeremiah describes the first destruction and mentions many individuals who were active in the Kingdom of Judah during its final days, such as ministers, priests, and officials.
Additionally, many of these names appear on seals and seal impressions from the early sixth century BCE, discovered in Jerusalem and other sites in Judah, indicating the historical accuracy of Jeremiah's account. Some of the individuals mentioned in the Book of Jeremiah continued to be active even after the destruction, as described in the episode of the assassination of Gedaliah son of Ahikam, whom the Babylonians appointed as governor of Judah.
Ultimately, the choice of the date for the fast reflects the historical and emotional complexity of that period, and the emphasis on the second destruction highlights its significant importance to the sages and the generation that experienced it.

Honoring Jewish Heroes of World War II
Have you visited The Chaim Herzog Museum of the Jewish Soldier in World War II? probably not, since it just opened a few months ago.
The museum pays tribute to the incredible bravery and resilience of Jewish heroes who stood against the horrors of World War II. Amidst unimaginable adversity, these remarkable individuals exemplified courage, strength, and unwavering hope.
๐๏ธ The Bielski Partisans: Led by brothers Tuvia, Asael, and Zus Bielski, this group saved over 1,200 Jews by creating a hidden community in the forests of Belarus. Their defiance and ingenuity provided a lifeline to many who faced persecution.
๐๏ธ Hannah Senesh: A young poet and parachutist, Hannah volunteered for a mission to assist Jewish communities in Nazi-occupied Europe. Though she was captured and executed, her legacy of valor and her powerful writings continue to inspire generations.
๐๏ธ Mordechai Anielewicz: As the commander of the Jewish Fighting Organization, Mordechai led the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in 1943. Despite overwhelming odds, his leadership and the bravery of the fighters became a symbol of resistance and defiance.
๐๏ธ Sgt. Meyer Levin: An American bomber pilot, Sgt. Levin flew numerous missions over Europe, displaying extraordinary skill and bravery. He is best remembered for his role in the daring Doolittle Raid, where he and his crew struck back against the Axis powers, demonstrating the strength and resolve of the American military.
๐๏ธ Lt. Col. Sidney Mashbir: Serving in the Pacific Theater, Lt. Col. Mashbir played a crucial role in the Allied intelligence efforts against Japan. As part of the Allied Translator and Interpreter Section, his linguistic skills and strategic insights were vital in decoding Japanese communications, contributing significantly to the success of Allied operations.
Just to name a few...
These heroes, and countless others, remind us of the enduring spirit and the fight for justice and dignity.

๐พโจ Chag Shavuot Sameach! โจ๐พ
As the holiday of Shavuot begins, we come together to celebrate the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. This joyous occasion is also known as the Festival of Weeks, marking seven weeks from Passover.
Let's immerse ourselves in the traditions of this beautiful festival:
๐ Torah Study: Dive deep into the wisdom of the Torah and engage in enlightening discussions.
๐ฅ Dairy Delights: Savor delicious dairy foods like cheesecakes, blintzes, and more. Yum!
๐พ Bikkurim: Remember the ancient custom of bringing the first fruits of the harvest to the Temple in Jerusalem.
๐ฟ Green Decorations: Adorn our homes and synagogues with greenery, symbolizing the harvest and the lushness of Mount Sinai.
May this Shavuot bring blessings, joy, and a renewed sense of connection to our heritage and traditions.

โจ Happy Lag BaOmer! โจ
Today we celebrate the 33rd day of the Omer, a day filled with historical and mystical significance. ๐ฟ๐ฅ
๐ History in Brief:
On this day, we commemorate the end of a devastating plague that took the lives of Rabbi Akiva's 24,000 students.
We also honor the legacy of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, a revered sage and mystic, who is said to have passed away on Lag BaOmer. His teachings brought profound spiritual light into the world.
๐ Traditions and Celebrations:
Bonfires light up the night, symbolizing the brilliant light of wisdom and spirituality.
Families and friends enjoy outdoor activities like picnics, hikes, and even archery, embracing the joy and freedom of the day.
Many young boys experience their first haircut at age three, marking a special milestone in their lives.
Let's come together to celebrate resilience, spirituality, and community. May the light of Lag BaOmer illuminate our hearts and bring us closer to one another. ๐ฅโค๏ธ๐

Day 3 of Kehilat Chovevei Tzion solidarity mission. I donโt know how to describe this in words. Deep sadness, horror and the concretizing of everything we have imagined since October 7th. We walked through the area and tried to absorb the magnitude of the horrors that happened. We witnessed the โcar cemeteryโ and trees planted on Tu Bshvat in honor of all the fallen kedoshim of Nova, Hashem Yinkom Damam. We boarded the bus and learned from Cheftzi, our amazing tour guide. about the โGaza Envelope,โ the kibbutzim and areas that surround the border. We were welcomed into Kibbutz Zikim, a kibbutz that was attacked by land and sea by over 100 Hamas terrorists, Kibbutz Zikim was spared the brutality that the other kibbutzes experienced due to heavy civilian resistance and some warning of imminent trouble. Elior, our chayal who spoke with us, shared the story of October 7th at this Kibbutz with sensitivity, compassion and deep wisdom. We met Yael, the commander general of Kibbutz Zikim, who is in charge of all the military operations and IDF presence at the Kibbutz as well as the only woman in this unit. The strength , courage and conviction Yael spoke to us with, left us all speechless. After an intense day with sadness and pain, we arrived at an army base filled with the most beautiful, kind and brave chayalot. We danced, we sang, we gave presents and we brought joy and fun to these young women's lives. It was a day filled with so many conflicting and sometimes confusing experiences and one that will forever be with us and leave us all forever changed. This is one of many solidarity trips, orchestrated by World Mizrachi and operated by World Class Travel. #SolidarityMission #AmYisraelChai #BringThemHome #jewishtravel
