Rockefeller Museum was the main museum of antiquities in Jerusalem during the British Mandate period. It was opened in 1938, founded by John D. Rockefeller Jr. and designed by Austin Harrison. The beautiful structure is built of local white limestone, and its elegant and eclectic design quotes elements from a variety of buildings across Jerusalem. The Museum became under Jordanian control in 1948. The Jordanians did not modify the exhibitions but covered any Hebrew signs with tape. Since 1967 the Museum operates on behalf of the Israel Museum. The museum was built on the site of Karm el-Sheikh, a property owned by the M***i of Jerusalem in the late 17th century. Elements of the original historic structure were incorporated into the museum design. The museum building has a beautiful central courtyard with a sunken area in the middle and a reflecting pool. Highlights of the exhibition are stucco sculpture from the Umayyad Hisham’s palace at Jericho, 8th-century doors from the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and 12th-century decorative architectural elements from the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. There are exhibition rooms devoted to ancient coins, Jewish culture from the Talmud period.
