Dear all, one more Halloween Special tour of mine is in two hours from now. Bet Shearim happens to be one of the most ancient and extensive Jewish burial sites in the world. Hundreds of tombs in around twenty burial grounds or catacombs in the caves have been uncovered to this day. The elaborate tombs look much different from typical Jewish burials. It was one of the most sacred places in the ancient Jewish world. Just next to the catacombs, one can find a natural cave that was once made into a large cistern for storing water. A huge smooth rectangular slab of a mysterious origin was found in that cave. To this day, the archeologists have more questions than answers. How was this giant cemetery in the caves founded. Where did those Jews come from? Where did they go? What did they do? And what is that rectangular slab?.. Mokum is a Yiddish word in Dutch that one can translate as “a place, location”. But this word was also applied to Amsterdam being a safe harbor for Jews. Before WWII, of course. It's believed to have been borrowed from Yiddish due to the strong presence of Jewish communities in Amsterdam throughout history. Indeed for various periods, this city was a relatively safe place for life and business of the Jewish communities.

And here I am. In the Netherlands. I’m not Jewish but like millions of other Israelis, I’ve been affected by this war. Only thanks to my colleagues, who long ago became my friends, and tourists and viewers, we have found this Mokum. For a while. I’m forever grateful to everyone who’s been in touch with us all this time. Thank you for your support, be it donations or words of kindness ❤️
