Dear all, today Jewish people are celebrating Tu BiShvat, the Jewish New Year for Trees. This holiday celebrates nature’s renewal by planting trees and enjoying the fruits of the land, symbolizing growth and abundance. It is also seen as a holiday of love, as trees represent life and continuity, reminding us of the deep connections between people, nature, and spiritual renewal. From time to time I do get tired of palaces and opulence. Where do I go instead? Archeological sites, of course. Thank goodness Israel has a few 😅 How about going to the Negev Desert? Join me on a virtual tour of Mamsh*t (also known as Memphis). It’s one of the best-preserved Nabatean cities in Israel. Nabateans are the guys who built Petra in Jordan and who were famous for their incense trade network. Dating back to the 1st century BCE, Mamsh*t was a key stop along the Incense Route, facilitating trade between Petra and the Mediterranean. The city thrived under Roman and Byzantine rule, with its wealthy merchants building grand homes, two impressive churches, and a sophisticated water collection system. Unlike other Nabatean cities, Mamsh*t was not abandoned after the decline of the incense trade but continued to be inhabited until the 7th century. Today, it is a UNESCO-listed site, offering visitors a glimpse into ancient desert life with its well-preserved structures and striking desert landscape. Are you in? 🇬🇪Tbilisi is famous for its lobbies (among many other things, of course) There is one house famous for its opulent lobby and rich history but infamous for the inaccessibility. Dear all, in the first picture, I’m standing on the balcony of the apartment of Joseph Brodsky, one of the most significant poets of the 20th century and the Nobel Prize laureate. In the second picture, you can see Joseph Brodsky himself standing on his balcony. He passed away on this day, January 28 in 1996. His importance stems from his unique ability to bridge Russian and American literary traditions, writing masterfully in both languages after being forced into exile from the Soviet Union in 1972. His poetry combined classical forms with modern sensibilities, while his essays demonstrated a profound understanding of culture, politics, and the human condition.
