“More than the Jews kept the Shabbat, the Shabbat kept them..” (Echad Ha’am- Asher Zvi Hirsch Ginsberg).

The Baltimore Associated Chair’s Mission welcomed Shabbat at the Western Wall, and were officially greeted by the Rabbi of the Kotel.

They were then joined by IDF soldiers in active duty, who sang, danced and prayed together for the safekeeping of all the soldiers and kidnapped civilians.

It was a moving experience for all and a way to show appreciation and raise everyone’s spirits during these difficult times.

“Writers of the history, stand with me, look into my eyes and see, people go away but never say goodbye…” (‘October Rain’, Keren Peles)

The Baltimore Associated Chair’s Mission visited the city of Ashkelon, who is their Partnership2Gether city.

They visited the municipality’s war room, they heard from Tali Levanon at the Resilience Center, and honored the memory of the October 7th victims at the Forest of the Fallen in the city.

They also visited the Barzilai hospital, where while treating wounded civilians & soldiers, was bombarded by rockets as well. As they enjoyed their lunch at the local Marina, the mission participants experienced first-hand as the sirens set off and quickly opted for shelter.

“Zoom in, zoom out - but never lose your focus”(Shikha Td).

The Baltimore mission had a jam-packed day, in which they got to get different perspectives on the current situation in Israel, getting an ‘bird’s eye view’ as well as an insight to individual stories and perspectives.

They started their day with a helicopter ride over Israel, traveling to the most northern location possible these days, together with Avi Melamed , a Middle East scholar who addressed the various complexities Israel faces in the region.

They landed in the יקב קטרון Kitron Gravity Winery and enjoyed a wine tasting, overlooking the vineyards. They were then joined by Lt. Col. (Res.) Sarit Ze’havi who shared insights about the current threats by Hizbollah.

They enjoyed an ethnic Druze lunch in the village of Hurfeish, and then continued to an inspirational meeting with Imad Habaka, who’s son Lt. Col. Salman Habaka fought on October 7th to protect the communities in the south and had tragically fallen a month later in Gaza.

Not only did they hear first-hand about the tragedy of the family, but they experienced the bombings and shelling that have become the reality of the north, understanding firsthand the fear and helplessness of the local residents.

Their trip ended on a hopeful note, at a farwell dinner hosted by Chef Gadi Elias, who’s been generously & voluntarily cooking for IDF soldiers throughout the war.

“Israel’s future is not dependent on what our ENEMIES will say, but rather on what the JEWS will do” (David Ben Gurion).

Over the past week, we’ve hosted 3 missions: Montreal mission to Israel, Miami Jewish federation mission and Baltimore's associated chair's mission , who’ve chosen to come to Israel specifically for this emotionally challenging week.

On Yom HaZikaron (Memorial day) the groups met with 12th grade students who shared how the current events amplified their desire & commitment towards their upcoming draft to the IDF.
They then stood together for the memorial siren, followed by a moving ceremony.

Another group joined the national memorial ceremony at Mt. Herzel, and witnessed the memorial flyover in honor of the fallen soldiers.
As difficult as it was to celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut (Independence day) this year, the participants were eager to lift the people’s spirits, and hosted a festive BBQ for soldiers serving in the front lines, as well as enjoyed a dancing activity with evacuees from Kibbutz Mefalsim.

During this difficult year, this message from our first Prime Minister couldn’t be more relevant - Jews from around the world showing their solidarity with Israel, standing proudly together.

“We all look normal, but we are a nation of superheroes. In each of us there’s a hidden soldier, ready to save the world” (HaTikva 6).

Saving lives can come in many forms, which were all needed on October 7th and from then onwards.

Our Temple Beth Sholom mission participants paid tribute to many heroes of the war - medical personnel, soldiers and their families. They were honored to see the ambulance they donated to Magen David Adom, to benefit the efforts of paramedics to save lives during peaceful times and war times alike.

They were hosted by a family in Gush Etzion and heard the story of a mother who has 4 sons participating in the war. She shared her story on how she’s been dealing with her daily fears for her sons. They were also joined by Michael Feurer, a reservist who shared his perspective on the war first hand.

"Why is this night different from any other night?" (The Haggadah)

As the Jewish people around the world will sit around their family table and replay the miracles that happened in the exodus from Egypt, this year's Passover will be a different one.

We've overcome so many obstacles in the past 6 months, and have seen great strength demonstrated militarally, mentally, spiritually and socially. Our bond between Israel and the Dispora Jews has never been stronger - as we saw in our MANY solidarity missions we ran over the past 6 months.

May this upcoming passover bring with it a spirit of renewal, of blossoming and prospering.
May the state of Israel see better days, and we wish all the hostages will be able to celebrate this holiday with their families."

“True generosity toward the future consists in giving everything to the present.” (Albert Camus)

The longstanding partnership between Hadera-Eiron region and the Southeast US communities was brought center-stage on our Jewish Federation of Richmond Solidarity Mission.

They learned about Israel’s geopolitical past and its ripple effects to this day while overlooking the seemline border from Kibbutz Magal. Then they met with teen leaders of Hadara HighSchool, discussing their challenges as teenagers during these difficult times, and what they’d wish for themselves in the future.

They closed off the day with an emotional dough offering ceremony at Nili Trabelsi’s house - a resident of Mitzpe Ilan whose husband has been on reserve duty since October 7th, and has shared his experiences with our group.

All these incredible meetings brought to life the connection between the past, the present and the future of the State of Israel - and of the Jewish people as a whole.

Our SD Solidarity Mission had an impactful experience, as they went to the Ethiopian Absorption Center in Kibbutz Ibim (part of the Partnership2Gether between SD & Sha’ar Hanegev municipality).

Despite their proximity to the border with Gaza, this community was successfully protected from the horrors of October 7th, and have decided to return to their homes after 5 long months.

Our participants volunteered to rebuild their center, creating new outdoor furniture for the community’s well-being and sense of togetherness. Their gesture was met with excitement and gratitude by the residents, who quickly joined in and helped paint the shelter that saved their lives many times before.

The Shura army base is the Military Rabbinical command, where they perform many religious procedures.
One of their responsibilities is to examine and repair (if needed) the Torah scrolls that are given to each IDF unit when they go to battle.

Over 900 scrolls were laying in the room where our NJJ Physicians solidarity mission learned about the work of the scribes, sounding similar to their own medical language. “Here is where we treat the wounded and restore them to return back to battle” said Rabbi Benzi Mann.

On the day they visited Shura, it was announced by the Chief Rabbi that there will be a unison prayer held that day for the release and wellbeing of the hostages.

This prayer was live-streamed from the Kotel, and our participants took part as well:
“We stood there, surrounded by 900 torah scrolls, said the ‘Shema Yisrael’ and sang together “Acheinu kol beit Yisrael”— “May hashem have mercy and release our brothers who are captive or in distress, remove them from darkness into light…”. The event was live-streamed from the Kotel, the site of the Beit Hamikdash, followed by a chorus of shofrot” (David Arbit, one of the participants).

‘Together, all the way. Together, we have no other way. Together we will open our hearts towards each other’ (Shimrit Or)

On October 7th, Hamas terrorists massacred or kidnapped anyone who came their way, indiscriminately of religion, including members of Israel's Muslim Bedouin community.

While people may not know, the Bedouin community in Israel fill an important role in the IDF and have a unique brigade. They too, like all Muslims around the world, have been observing Ramadan for the past month- fasting during the day and eating a festive meal, "Iftar", at night.

Our San Diego Solidarity Mission met with the 585 Bedouin brigade commanders and soldiers to show their appreciation for the units' continuous efforts to protect Israeli citizens of all faiths. The solidarity between the Jews and Bedouins was reinforced over the shared tragedy, and the participants' sympathy and support meant a great deal for the Bedouin soldiers.

“Who can utter the heroism of Israel, can one even count them?
After all, in every generation a hero will rise, who shall come to its people’s aid”
(Menashe Ravina)

As the months go by since the events of October 7th, the stories of heroism are slowly surfacing. One of those is of the Slotsky brothers, Noam & Yishay.

On that day, upon understanding that the citizens in the Gaza Envelope are under attack, they left their home in Be’er Sheva, with no hesitation, and set out to fight the terrorists. They soon after gave up their lives fighting for the safety of Kibbutz Alumim residents.

Our New Jersey Women’s Solidarity Mission paid their respects to those brothers in arms, as they visited their graves.

Later that day, the group visited Sha’are Zedek hospital to hear about the heroic brothers from Noam & Yishay’s mother, Talia, a nurse at the hospital, who has experienced treating wounded soldiers from the battlefield.

They all left the meeting truly understanding the quote said by the brothers, “a hero is one who cannot stand idly by”.

“Art speaks where words are unable to explain” (Pam Holland).

Our New Jersey Women’s Solidarity Mission had a unique visit to the old Jaffa Artists Residency (JAR).

During the visit, they toured the facility and engaged in conversations with artists who were evacuated from their homes in the south and north of Israel due to the October 7th attack, and are now being hosted at JAR.

These artists, who’d lost their studios and thus their ability to create art, have found a home and inspiration at JAR where they were provided with not only art supplies but a feeling of stability and safety- enabling them to continue to create both emotionally and practically.

Their stories that came forth through the art and the conversation, left a strong impact on our participants, learning and understanding the wars’ ripple effects on all walks of life.

“What I discovered in those emotional days.. – perhaps what each of us discovers when Jewish identity takes us by surprise – is that this covenant is still alive.” (Rabbi Jonathan Sacks z”l)

These words were reiterated during our Jewish Federation of Detroit Solidarity Mission as the group met with soldiers of the Search & Rescue unit (669) for lunch.

“Whatever we can do to be of support to you while you’re here being the support to us, we’re there for you” said one of the mission participants, representing everyone’s thoughts and emotions.

Another type of rescue took place on the civilian front, as the representatives of ZAKA worked relentlessly to treat as many people as possible at the Nova Festival.

One example of those heroes are the Landau family. a father and his 3 sons, who worked to do all that they could to save lives and to bring to a respectful burial all those who did not survive the attack. One of the sons came to speak with our group and described their experience from October 7th.

“God, give us the serenity to accept what cannot be changed, the courage to change what can be changed, and the wisdom to know one from the other.” (The Serenity prayer, Niebuhr)

The events of October 7th took Israel by surprise, and that cannot be changed, yet the way we choose to comprehend the situation, spiritually and emotionally, is in our hands.

Our Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey Solidarity Mission combined the two, as they had the opportunity to visit two communities in the south (Netiv Ha’asara & Kfar Azza), who’ve been severely impacted by the attacks.

As disheartening as it was to visit and see the remains of these once beautiful towns, it was important for them to hear the stories first-hand from people who live there, in order for them to become living witnesses to this massacre.

The mission participants then supported the soldiers at the fore-front, by handing out warm clothes that will help them keep fighting even during the cold days.

The mission also participated in a graffiti tour, depicting many of the heroes of October 7th on the streets of Tel Aviv. These paintings were painted in order to help raise the national morale during these difficult times.

Our Miami Solidarity Mission had an impactful experience, as they met with many people who shed light on different facets of the war, exposing them to personal stories on the one hand, and policy issues on the other.

Amongst others, they’ve met with Ayelet Verbin, chair of the Fund for Victims of Terror who addressed the issues that now arise due to the amounts of families who have now joined the circle of victims; Menashe Ram, who’s son Omri was murdered at the Nova festival, shared his daily struggle since October 7th; they met an artist who exposed the group to his work that depicts the atrocity taken place at the Nova Festival and commemorates its victims, and many more.

They also had the opportunity to hear from officials such as the First Lady of Israel, Mrs. Michal Herzog and the Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem, Mrs. Stephanie Hallett.

Even during these darkest times for the Israeli people, our unity and support for one another is the beacon of light that is needed to find some inner happiness.

Our AFMDA solidarity mission made it a point to bring some light & positivity to those who were hurt the most: they volunteered packing food packages and also met up for a dancing and singing event with evacuees from the north of Israel, to lift their spirits.

These activities were truly the fulfillment of the saying “giving is receiving”, as it was an impactful experience to all who participated.

The mission also visited various MDA facilities across Israel, showing their support to the heroes who took a vital part in saving many lives on October 7th.

"May your hands be an extension of your heart and may you do the work of love with them." (Aja Monet).

The Israeli agriculture suffered a huge setback – as their fields were left untouched due to lack of workers during this time of war.

Our Federation CJA Montreal Solidarity Mission took the "farm to table" concept a step further, and volunteered at 2 locations in 1 day:
In the morning, we collaborated with LEKET Israel and picked kohlrabies in the fields; then in the evening, we collaborated with SAHI organization and packed food for the needy.

It was an exhausting yet fulfilling day, and we are proud that we could be here to extend our hands & hearts to the people and land of Israel.

We are dedicating this post, on International Women’s Day mentioned this week, to all the heroines on the battlefield and on the home front. We stand by you.

We had an incredible all-women solidarity mission visit Israel from the South Palm Beach County, who put a special emphasis on the women’s stories from October 7th (and from then on). By meeting various women in leadership positions, survivors of the attack, mothers of victims - this gave our participants an impactful and relatable female perspective on the war.

They met with female speakers such as Ayelet Verbin (chair of the fund for victims of terror) and the first lady of Israel, Mrs Michal Herzog; they visited the sites and volunteered with soldiers and evacuees, solidifying the bond between jewish women across the globe.

"I have no other country, even if my land is burning…" (Ehud Manor)

Many stories are yet to be told about the bravery acts of the IDF soldiers during this war, and our solidarity mission were lucky to meet a brave combat soldier, Master Sargent Inon, who was wounded in combat.

He and his fellow soldiers from the 630th brigade were out on their last mission before taking a short break back home.
They entered a tunnel not knowing it was booby-trapped, and the explosion killed 3 soldiers and wounded 16, Inon among them.

He was airlifted to the Sha'arei Tzeddek hospital, where he undertook 3 surgeries, and where our solidarity mission met him and Prof. Merin, who shared some of the moral dilemmas the medical team are dealing with during times of war.

The participants took the opportunity to sing a prayer for Inons' (and fellow soldiers') full recovery.

"Behind every great man there's a strong woman" (Meryll Frost).

The war has taken a toll not only on those who are in the battlefield, but also on their families whom they left behind.

Our solidarity mission wanted to pay tribute to those strong women and children of reservists who've been dealing with this new status that's been forced upon them, with stamina and resilience.

We were excited to share this fun and connecting activity with the MAMATCAL organization, as we danced together in a headphone party and released the emotional & physical stress and created a positive memory for months to come.

As they dined together, the soldiers shared their stories and gave our participants a glimpse into their thoughts and emotions about their active part in protecting the people and the land of Israel.

To close off this event, all soldiers and mission participants stood together to sing the Israeli national anthem, HaTikva. It was a very moving moment that will be cherished by all, as Am Israel stood together- Israelis and Diaspora Jews- to unite with a mutual prayer, to keep the Jewish state standing tall.

"Blessed is the flame that burns in the secret fastness of the heart" (Hannah Szenes).

The words of the famous war heroine from WW2, strike a chord as the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas formed a partnership with the Zikim Kibbutz, which was established by immigrants who boarded the "Hannah Szenes ship" (Ma'apilim) in 1945.

The participants of the JF of Greater Dallas Solidarity Mission heard the stories of the Kibbutz from the October 7th attacks, learning about the heroic battle of their rapid response team who managed to fight off the terrorists.

This new relationship between the communities will be the beginning of a longstanding commitment and support.

There's nothing that symbolizes the Jewish continuity in the land of Israel more than the Kotel, the Western Wall, and it couldn’t be more meaningful to begin our Solidarity Mission with an opening ceremony there.

We were honored by the presence of Mrs. Sarit Zussman, a Jerusalemite and mother of Ben Zussman z"l who fell in battle in Khan Yunis. She shared stories of her son and quoted his final words, "I am grateful for the privilege to defend our beautiful land and the people of Israel". Her words were inspiring and moving, as she spoke about the need for a better future ahead and how, through unity, we can bring it forth.
