A few months ago, a new Minister of Tourism took office and invited Itai Green, the founder of Innovate Israel & Israel Travel Tech Startups Community to a meeting. They discussed the potential of Israeli entrepreneurs in promoting global tourism and agreed that every week he would meet a promising startup from the traveltech community, ITTS.
And so it was: Every week since then, the Minister meets entrepreneurs and promotes collaborations between traditional tourism industry players and startups so that the tourism industry will remain relevant at a time when the pace of change is so rapid.
Several weeks ago, when the Minister of Tourism was promoting the IMTM TLV Tourism Conference, he asked the organizers to meet Itai Green so that he could put together a panel on technology.
When the Minister asks, Itai immediately responds... And he approached his friend Luis Araujo, who leads Portugal's advanced tourism industry and suggested he will lead a panel on the subject. Luis immediately stepped in and said that the panel should focus on technologies that will allow the tourism world to continue operating even during a future health-related crisis like the one we were facing now.
Luis was right, this is an issue that interests governments across the globe after almost two years in which a significant percentage of their GDP has dropped and the tourism industry has stood still.
Yesterday it happened. The event was opened by Tourism Minister Yoel Rezbozov יואל רזבוזוב - Yoel Razvozov, followed by Luis who took the stage as a keynote speaker and then led a panel with the participation of Minister Zayed Rashid Alzayani from Bahrain, Tourism Ministry Director-General Adel el Fakir from Morocco, Vice Minister Vicas Jurgutis from the Republic of Lithuania and Deputy Division Director Adam Cutler from Israel.
After the panel, Itai presented how Open Innovation, the ability to collaborate with external parties is critical for success. The more organizations collaborate with others, particularly with members of academia and startups, the faster can solutions be assimilated.
Then, led by Roberto Antunes, the head of NEST Centro de Inovação do Turismo, 10 startups took the stage and presented creative solutions from the worlds of traveltech, healthtech, data, homeland security, virtual reality and automation which are very relevant in order to ensure the continued functioning of the tourism industry during such crises.
