Guiding during wartime is very rare, and it's a somewhat surreal (but welcome) experience. I'm grateful to have spent 3 days with a delegation of journalists and parliamentary staff from the Netherlands to Israel and the Palestinian Authority.
We delved into the details of Jerusalem's conflicted geopolitical status and its rich cultural, historical and religious heritage.

It was a horrible winter, but a very rainy one. Spring is accordingly intense this year. Very dissonant with human reality.

After impressive amounts of rain, spring arrived in the region. These are scenes from the Carmel mountain range and its surroundings.

Jerusalem's prominent fortress, the "Tower of David" is not only an impressive complex displaying remnants from over 2,000 years. It is also home to a wonderfully curated museum dedicated to the city's history, and the inner courtyard is home to various events and art fares on weekends.

After 3 years of modernization and renewal, the new, permanent exhibition is finally open.

Whenever you visit Jerusalem again, leave at least half a day to absorb this gem.

The beautiful Manasseh hills, 20 km southeast of Haifa. International tourists never get here. That's understandable. No famous holy sites, no burning conflict, just serene countryside. And so lush and green after the first rains.

The remote southeastern Arava valley is the only region entirely left out of the current war situation. No rockets, no sirens, no preemptive evacuation. The peace treaty 🕊️ with neighboring Jordan is a wonderful asset. May we know more such achievements. Amen.

The "sitvanit" flower, however, doesn't know much about it. Neither do the dates on the palm trees or the Mediterranean sunsets from mount Carmel. Fortunately.

Israeli society is, by large, stunned. Stunned, in the literal sense. Words fail. Headlines fail. Numbers and statistics fail.

The grief, fear and terror can shatter one's faith in humanity. Such feelings can obliterate the social fabric of Israel as a whole, as well as the humanity of Israelis as individuals. This result seems nearly inevitable. But if that happens on a large scale, it would mean total victory for the thousands of perpetrators that carried out Oct 7th. It would lead to Israel's disintegration.

This video and other stories of heroism, especially those of joint Arab-Jewish solidarity in the face of horror, are the stream of oxygen needed for this society to survive. It is the only way for a future. Not slogans, not flags, not yesterday's politicians - pure human solidarity.

The squill, also called drimia, is a master bloomer with superpowers. It holds onto water from last winter's rains in a hermetic bulb, throughout dry months with scorching hot temperatures. At the end of the summer, against all odds, it grows a tall, long stem at lightening speed (8-10 cm per day!).
The stem produces beautiful, scentless white flowers, which draw all insects around even without a strong scent, as no competition exists.

A beautiful and truly inspiring plant to witness year after year.

The Templer hotel in the heart of Haifa's "Carmel Center", the "downtown" on top of the mountain.

Built as a hotel by German Protestants in 1893, it was later owned by various Christian missionaries, amongst them Francis Newton, a British pro-Arab activist in Mandatory Palestine.

Today this beautiful building is part of Haifa's cinematheque and auditorium, the city's largest cultural center.
