Legendary Jewish actor James Cann passed away Wednesday at the age of 82.

Caan, born in the Bronx, was the son of Jewish immigrants from Germany - Sophie Falkenstein and Arthur Caan, a kosher butcher.

He played football for two years at Michigan State University, where he was a member of the Jewish Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity. He transferred to Hofstra University on Long Island, where he became friends with fellow undergraduate Francis Ford Coppola and went on to star in blockbuster hits "The Godfather" and "Misery".

In 2016 during a trip to Israel, Caan told a reporter from 'The Media Line' that no one had ever questioned his support of Israel. “I don’t hang around with antisemites if that’s what you mean, and I don’t know any,” he said, “and if I did, I’d punch them in the face.”

May this legend's memory always be a blessing.

Last week I had the privilege of guiding tour guide students from the בית הספר לתיירות בישראל on their Galilee campus. Two days of intense seeing, communicating, learning and experiencing the sights and stories of the north.

Mt Meron, the highest peak in the Galilee (~4000ft), is known not just for the breathtaking views, but also for its endearing ecological beauty. Autumn colors include both the reds and yellows of the leaves, but also the fall blooms.

Colors of the morning ... boker tov from the flooded Kinneret savanna. Over the course of the last two years the level of the Sea of Galilee has risen 6 meters (19 ft) and flooded the area of the Jordan River delta creating an expanse wet wilderness worthy of exploration!

Please get out into wild places, whether it's in your backyard or if you have the opportunity to travel. It's hard to be narrow-minded if you travel and see other people, how they think, what they do. And get under the sea. Look at creatures and how they live. It's hard to be reckless with nature if you have spent time in a wild place. So be a curious explorer.
