SEEING THE TOWER OF DAVID IN A DIFFERENT LIGHT.

CAESAREA PRISON LOCATIONS

Water cisterns were often used during Biblical times not only for storing water, but were also used as underground chambers, hiding places for fugitives, burial places, and even as prison cells. A point in question might be for Jeremiah, “So they took Jeremiah and cast him into the cistern of Malchi′ah, the king’s son.” (Jerm 38:6) The practice of using cisterns as prisons continued through the Roman era. At Caesarea Marittima there are two areas of Cistern-Prisons that are excavated, under (1) the Citadel and under (2) the Herodian Promontory palace near the theater.

PAUL / SAUL OF TARSUS was Jewish from the Greek town of Tarsus and a Roman citizen. He was held in prison at Caesarea for 2 years (Acts 24:27) before his trial at Caesarea (Acts 25:23-27 through Acts 26) and then sailed by boat from Caesarea to bear witness in Rome in the 1 century CE as he had done at Caesarea.

RABBI AKIVA during the 2nd Jewish Revolt (132-135 CE), upheld Simon Bar Kochba like the Messiah. The name “Bar Kochba” translated is "Son of a Star," suggests fulfilling the words, “I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not nigh: a star shall come forth out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel;” (Numbers 24:17). Rome undoubtedly was opposed to hearing the Messiah question repeated. Rabbi Akiva was held in prison at Caesarea for three years before his trial and legend says he was flaved (when flesh is stripped from the body) in front of an audience in the theater of Caesarea in the 2nd century CE. The great sage Rabbi Akiva is well quoted in the Mishna such as ‘Menachot 29.’

During the 2014-23 archaeological seasons of digging to the east of Herod the Great’s Promontory Palace with a peristyle garden a subterranean T-shaped structure was found originally used as a T-shaped cistern converted into a prison. In the cistern-prison was found the inscription: “Lord [Yeshua/Jesus] help Procopius.” The signs posted suggest that the researchers believe that this may have been where Paul was imprisoned.” (57-59 CE) rather than the citadel. And a second sign suggests that Rabbi Akiva was also imprisoned here for over three years at Caesarea during the Second Jewish Revolt (132-135 CE).

At the time of writing (2024) the prisons were not open to the general public

BIRDS EYE VIEW OF THE SUNKEN HARBOR OF CAESAREA MARITIMA

One of the world’s first man-made harbors was created on a stretch of sandy beach in the ancient Roman province of Judea. Herod the Great is credited with the installation of the harbor which he named Caesarea Maritima in honor of his ally and patron, Augustus Caesar. Construction of the breakwaters utilized enormous quantities of a special type of concrete invented by the Romans which could harden underwater. The secret ingredient was a type of volcanic ash mined from deposits near Mount Vesuvius on the southern Italian coast. This ash was shipped in barges to the site of the harbor. A breakwater 500 meters (1,640 feet) long was laid down and then docks were built within the enclosed waterway. An artificial island at the mouth of the harbor housed a lighthouse to guide mariners at night. Other smaller islands may have been decorated with oversized bronze statues. Today the harbor and its city are preserved as Caesarea Maritima National Park in Israel.

COMPASSION IS A GREAT VIRTUE

Franz Kafka's touching story of comforting a little girl who lost her doll will melt your heart. At 40, Kafka met the girl in a park and began writing letters pretending to be her doll, sharing 'adventures' from around the world. Years later, a hidden message in one of these letters revealed a life-changing truth. ❤️ Don’t miss the rest of this beautiful story!
