Ramadan, the ninth month of the Muslim calendar, is one of the most sacred times for Muslims. It is the month in which it is believed that the Holy Qur'an was sent down from heaven "as a guidance for men and women, a declaration of direction, and a means of salvation."

Muslims believe that in A.D. 610, the angel Gabriel appeared to Prophet Muhammad and revealed the Quran, the Islamic holy book. That revelation, Laylat Al-Qadar—or the “Night of Power”—is believed to have occurred during Ramadan. Muslims fast during that month as a way to commemorate the revelation of the Quran.

In photo: A traditional Iftar spread.

Iftar = the breaking of the fast. In Ramzan, fasts start before sunrise and end at sunset. Yes, there is no drinking water or eating of fruits involved.

Hello all. Every time I go around the city countless thoughts flow through me. And today when I was passing by this beautiful home in my street I realised how intelligent people were and how simple were their needs. A lot of houses and havelis that were made even till some 30 years ago had a chabutara outside their home. One reason was, of course when someone came to your house the time that he knocks on your door using the big hooped rings or the Kundi “Thak thak” , till the time you could answer your door , the person could rest on the chabutara. But secondly and more importantly these were places where 1. People who were not allowed to enter ( possibly a grown male friend) or were shy to enter could sit and chat for hours. So these are privately owned properties for the public to use. But of course with time, we have grown self oriented than community oriented ( and of course more fearful of the unknown) and hence people, specially young adults sitting at your chabutara are not welcomed. Plus of course these chabutara’s are going away , we want more and more space for our personal properties. There are two more things that I wanted to talk about in this post. 1. We like to believe that we are growing towards affluence and what not. But if you carefully observe how even the foot of the chabutara, just before the drain ( naali ) is so inticrately carved. Imagine the kind of vanity and exuberance our ancestors were existing in. 2. Do you see a pot carved underneath the chabutara? The same motif can be seen at a lot of monuments built by the Mughals and the prime example of it is in the finial that sits atop of the beautiful Taj Mahal. So when does a motif starts belonging to a particular community, collective or dynasty? Any thoughts. Share them with us.

The story of Hazrat Abul Ullah dates back around 400 years when he intended to go to Ajmer to become a mureed or follower of Gareeb Nawaz. However, he was instructed by Gareeb Nawaz to visit Hazrat Shah Ameer Abdullah Irari in Agra (he is buried near Itmad Ud Daulah). Since then, he resided in Agra, engaging in missionary work and contributing to the upliftment of the people. He was later buried here.

This Dargah is often referred to as Abu Lala, a mispronunciation of the original name Sayyedna Shah Ameer Abul Ullah.

In photo: My Tai Abba / Uncle - He stays in London and everytime he is in Agra he makes it a point to visit this mazaar.

Managing large groups indeed presents its own set of hurdles and triumphs. Our strategy is to ensure that all our walk leaders focus on the same important points, albeit each one of them delivers it with their unique flair and approach towards history. At the heart of our operation, however, remains our audience, who we always strive to engage and captivate.

Thanks for collaborating on this one.

We are proud to have played a significant role in the transformation of Agra into a vibrant and inclusive destination. Our commitment to positive social change has driven us to advocate for and ensure that the benefits of tourism are shared equitably. We firmly believe that in order for our city to grow sustainably, we must go beyond the traditional tourist circuit and distribute these benefits widely. One of the best tools is imagination and we often deploy it during our walks where we ask our guests to imagine the Taj through the eyes of a traveller in the medieval era, someone who would not have seen a monument so magnanimous and impressive and imagine the psychological impact this would have....And sometimes we just take our guests out there on horseback to witness the glory first hand.

A beautiful mansion in Kashmiri Bazaar.

Kashmiri Bazaar was the most vibrant market up till the beginning of the 19th century. It is said that any procession in the city would always pass through this narrow alley, there would be people carrying Hookahs made of silver for the public to smoke and the municipality would put lamps that would burn from gas. The Kashmiri was also home to the famed courtesans of Agra.

This historic locality is one of the stops on our Agra 101 walk where we delve into the origins of Agra.

"My fore-fathers laid the foundation of this temple and our family has been continuously in service of this temple." - Jain Monk, met during the Agra 101 walk.

The Jain community was historically close to the Mughal rulers often in the role of rich traders. Owing to the same reason multiple Jain temple of historical interest are sprinkled across the fortified city of Akbarabad.

Diwali was known as the Jashn-e Chiragha’n under the Mughals and was celebrated with great enthusiasm. The Rang Mahal in Red Fort was lit up with diyas on Diwali.

The Mughal emperor was weighed in gold and silver, which were distributed amongst the poor. Fireworks under the supervision of the mir atish would be ignited near the walls of the Red Fort. And a special Akash Diya (Light of the Sky) was lit with great pomp, placed atop a pole 40 yards high, supported by sixteen ropes, and fed on several maunds of binaula (cottonseed oil) to light up the darbar.

Wishing you a very happy and safe Diwali.

Inside of a haveli in Agra/walled city of Akbarabadi .

This particular haveli was home to the rich merchant Lala Kokamal who was a spice merchant. The Haveli features a single door entry for security and in times of any attack on the city the main door would be closed saving the people from what is happening on the road outside.

The city that Agra was in the 17th century can not just be seen through its royal buildings like the Taj Mahal, ItmadUdDaula and the multiple palaces within the fort but also from the havelis that have been built within the fortified city. These havelis almost all of them have a royal facade that is intricately carved and contains motifs of the royalty.

Agra Heritage Walks

A walk through alleys & lanes of Agra which brings alive the old city through a blend of historical facts, pieces of memory, stories of natives, work of craftsmen and traditional recipes home-cooked by local women. It is an experience beyond the known monuments, in a manner that overcomes the distant, checklist way of knowing a place; bridging the gap between those looking and those looked at.
