LUMBINI : BIRTH PLACE OF LORD BUDDAH
Siddhartha Gautama, the Lord Buddha, was born in 623 B.C. in the famous gardens of Lumbini, which soon became a place of pilgrimage. Among the pilgrims was the Indian emperor Ashoka, who erected one of his commemorative pillars there. The site is now being developed as a Buddhist pilgrimage centre, where the archaeological remains associated with the birth of the Lord Buddha form a central feature.
The Lord Buddha was born in 623 BC in the sacred area of Lumbini located in the Terai plains of southern Nepal, testified by the inscription on the pillar erected by the Mauryan Emperor Asoka in 249 BC. Lumbini is one of the holiest places of one of the world's great religions, and its remains contain important evidence about the nature of Buddhist pilgrimage centres from as early as the 3rd century BC.

The complex of structures within the archaeological conservation area includes the Shakya Tank; the remains within the Maya Devi Temple consisting of brick structures in a cross-wall system dating from the 3rd century BC to the present century and the sandstone Ashoka pillar with its Pali inscription in Brahmi script. Additionally there are the excavated remains of Buddhist viharas (monasteries) of the 3rd century BC to the 5th century AD and the remains of Buddhist stupas (memorial shrines) from the 3rd century BC to the 15th century AD. The site is now being developed as a Buddhist pilgrimage centre, where the archaeological remains associated with the birth of the Lord Buddha form a central feature.

The scenic union territory surrounded by snow-clad mountains, is among the most popular tourist destinations in India. Owing to the numerous Bollywood movies like Jab Tak Hai Jaan and 3 Idiots, Ladakh has become a hotspot for tourists leading to over crowdedness and littering. In order to save money and spend a relaxing vacation with your friends and family, you must visit Sikkim in the north-east. Brimming with lush greenery, sprawling hills and Buddhist monasteries, the state is certainly a better choice for those looking for a peaceful escape.

Best time for visit: March to May and October to mid-December
Things to do: Explore the age-old monasteries, take a stroll into the wild, indulge in adventure activities, ride a yak and buy Sikkimese handicrafts and Tibetan goods

Gurez is 130 kilometres from Srinagar and is roughly 35-40 minutes away from the scenic Tulail Valley. The 58-kilometer road from Srinagar to Bandipore passes past stunning vistas of the Manasbal and Wular lakes, which are located on the outskirts of North Kashmir. The huge Kishenganga River, also known as the Neelum, rushes into the valley from Pakistan, and its various brooks, streams, and tributaries rush and gurgle through the valley.

The iconic pyramid limestone peak Habba Khatun, named for the famous Kashmiri poetess, and, of course, the 3,300-meter-high Razdan Pass, may be seen along the way. The Gurez Valley is located along a part of the old Silk Route that linked Kashmir with Gilgit. The Dards, a clan from Gurez, are thought to be descendants of the Greek garrison left behind by Alexander’s army. With its wooden log houses, picturesque hamlets, shepherds, and spectacular, natural background, the land looks to be locked in time. There’s no internet, and there’s barely a signal to begin with.

Have you ever fantasised about walking on the moon? You can’t right now, but you can go to Lamayuru. You will feel as if you are strolling on another planet due to its moon-like landform. Consider Lamayuru to be the South American equivalent of Iceland.

The grandeur of Lamayuru, located 130 kilometres from Leh, is worth a night’s stay. A private taxi or a self-driven vehicle are the finest ways to get to Lamayuru. It takes only 3 hours to go to Lamayuru (one way). Don’t rely on public transit to get about and make sure you visit lamayuru monastery while visiting lamayuru village.

Located in the delightful Lahaul and Spiti Valley, Kaza is the subdivisional headquarter of the Spiti Valley. This town is similar to the landscapes of Ladakh and Tibet; rocky, rugged, and excessively charming. It is also known for its La Darcha Festival and Sakya Tangyud Monastery.

The town also acts as a base camp for the people indulging in trekking and mountaineering, mainly because of its central location and proximity to spectacular tourist spots. Kaza’s major attractions are Kai Monastery, Komik Village, Sakya Kaza Monastery, Kibber Village, Dhankar Lake, and Dhankar Monastery. This offbeat destination of Himachal Pradesh is also a heaven for nature lovers who wish to spend their vacation away from the crowd in the lap of mother nature.

DAKSUM ( Altitude 2438 Metres ) is a scenic spot located in the dense forests. This scenic spot falls on the Anantnag-Sinthan-Kishtwar road. A gushing stream flows through Daksum which is rich in trout fish. It is a forest retreat girdled by mountains. If you Travel on NH1B that connects Anantnaag Town of Kashmir with Kishtwar Via Simthen Top ( Altitude 3748 Metres) , You pass through Daksum ( just 36 Kms away from Anantnaag ). One can call it a sleepy forest resort with some houses and a Government Rest House .
Daksum lies on the trekking route towards Kishtwar and is often used as a base by trekkers who wish to cross the Sinthan Pass (Sinthan Top) at 3750 metres. The road to Sinthan Pass was closed due to heavy snow at the top when we visited, and hence we weren’t able to drive to the pass and enjoy panoramic view of the valley.
A part from a few homestays, the only tourist accommodation facility in Daksum is the government-run JKTDC tourist bungalow. During summer, tourists pitch their camps on the banks of the Bringhi River and enjoy a day of trout-fishing, angling, and sleeping under the blanket of stars. While staying in Daksum, you can revel in the warm hospitality of local Gujjars and be a part of their cultural traditions.
Daksum is certainly amongst the most beautiful unexplored places in Kashmir and should be a part of offbeat Kashmir itinerary for the ones who seek peace and quiet in the company of nature.

I end this post with lines from a Gazal of renowned urdu poet Firaq Gorakhpuri

Jee mein Aataa Hai Tujh Ko Pukaraa karuun
Rehguzar Rehguzar Aastaan Aastaan..
Boo Zameen se Mujhe Aa Rahi hai teri
Tujh Ko kyon Doondiye Aasmaan Aasmaan
( Firaq)

( I feel like calling you and you alone
At Every path and inside every shrine .
I smell your fragrance from the land underneath ,
Then why search you in the sky above )

Yusmarg, which means “Jesus Meadow,” is 45 kilometres from Shrinagar in western Kashmir’s Badgam region. Mint, apple, lime, emerald, and other hues of green are depicted in beautiful green meadows bordered by heavy wooded alpine woods.

The vistas are breathtaking, reminiscent of an alpine valley in Europe surrounded by snow-capped peaks. A four-kilometer horse ride deep into the woods brings you past some stunning scenery, as a trickling creek meanders between the pine trees. The Nilnag lake, ensconced amid the hills, shimmers in the distance.
