Shillong, the capital city of Meghalaya, India is just 55 km from Mawsynram, the world's wettest place. It is one of the important tourist destinations in the northeast India. It is often referred to as the ‘Scotland of the East’ due to its striking similarity with the Scottish Highlands. Shillong is also often called as "India's Rock Capital" due to its inhabitants' great passion for music. The city derives its name from ‘Leishylong’ – the Superpower or God who is believed to reside on the Shillong Peak, overlooking the city. Lying in the cradle of tall pine trees and pineapple shrubs, Shillong’s undulating terrain is a constant source of attraction for tourists both from the country and abroad. The climate is moderately warm and humid during summer but quite cold in winters. October-November and March-April are the best months to visit Shillong. The beautiful and historic places of tourist interest include Don Bosco Museum, Butterfly museum, Botanical Garden, Shillong Peak, Umiam Lake and Ward’s Lake.
