Happy Mahavir Jayanti
Cave 32, Shrine Mahavira Ellora Caves, Maharashtra

Excavated during 9th and 10 centuries, cave no 32 belongs to Jain Digambara sect. Known as Indrasabha, this cave has a hall at upper level which was used for religious purposes.

Jain caves (30-34) of Ellora were painted extensively on uncarved portions of walls, pillars and ceilings. Many of those paintings have survived to date. These paintings depict dancers and musicians, celestial beings, garlands, offerings and praying representations. Some of them show Tirthankaras and god Indra apart from some other gods and goddesses.

These caves are smaller than the Buddhist and Hindu caves nonetheless they feature highly detailed carvings. They are rich in architectural and devotional ideas such as pillared verandas, symmetric mandala and puja (worship). Emphasis is place on the depiction of the 24 Jinas (or Tirthankaras) apart from gods, goddesses, Yaksha and Yakshi prevalent during the period.
