Kavala Gandusha | Oil Pulling • Dinacharya

Kavala means Gargling
Gandusha means holding fluid inside the mouth

In Ayurveda, Kavala and Gandusha are the procedures described in Dincharya i.e. the daily regimen and are useful in prevention of the diseases of the mouth, teeth and the gums.

Filling the mouth in the morning with oil or medicated water daily and holding for a few minutes without moving it inside the oral cavity is called Gandusha.

Oil pulling (Gandusha) has been used to prevent decay, oral mal odor, gum bleeding, dryness of throat, cracked lips and for strengthening the teeth, gums and the jaw.

It is a simple daily regimen, which, when done routinely, enhances the senses, brings about a feeling of freshness and maintains clarity in the voice. After adopting this procedure properly, one feels lightness and clarity in the mouth.

It also relieves pain and discomfort. A Gandusha is to be held inside the oral cavity till there is uncontrollable salivation, secretions of tears from the eyes or mucous/watery discharge through the nose.

जिह्वा प्रक्षालन • Dincharaya Series

Ayurveda draws a meaningful connection between the tongue and your state of gut health.

The degree and nature of the toxicity, dosha imbalances, and strength of your digestion can be easily diagnosed by analyzing its features.
Any discoloration in the tongue is considered to be indicative of illness or imbalances in specific parts of the body.

What does your tongue indicate:

🌼White color of the tongue reflects kapha imbalance, caused by mucus formation

🌼Red or yellow-green discoloration is due to pitta imbalance

🌼Vata vitiation is reflected in black or brown colors in the tongue

🌼Pale colored tongue shows deficiency in rakta dhatu

🌼If your tongue is too dry, you may need more hydration and it could reflect dryness of rasa dhatu

The tongue harbors both beneficial and harmful bacteria.

Just like plaque is the accumulated waste in the teeth, bacteria and food particles tend to accumulate between the papillae. If these particles aren’t removed in time, they get covered with a mucus lining that can lead to persistent bad breath.

So cleaning the tongue is a vital part of oral hygiene.

🌼 How to practice tongue cleaning:

- Gently scrape the tongue from the back forward, until you have scraped the whole surface for 7-14 strokes.

This stimulates the internal organs, helps digestion, and removes dead bacteria.

Ideally, Vata can use a gold scraper, Pitta a silver one, and Kapha can use a copper scraper.
Stainless steel can be used by everyone.

श्री रुद्रम् नमकम् • Mantra Mondays

Shri Rudram or Rudra Puja is a set of mantras that are done to invoke and pay obeisance to the Shiva Tattva (Shiva energy/ principle) in the cosmos.

These mantras not only help one grow spiritually, but they also help one achieve everything else that they desire in their material life.

Shri Rudram consists of five major parts, Namakam is one of them.

🌼 Namakam: Namakam is recognizing the presence of Shiva tattva in everything. As per quantum physics,  we are all made up of the same energy. This part of Rudram is done to recognize that the same energy pervades in everyone and everything.
For example, obeisance is paid even to the bow and arrows of the Rudra.
At one place, the chant mentions: Vanchate Parivanchate, taskaranaye namo namaha
Here, the Rudra is worshipped in the form of thieves and smugglers.
This is to recognize that Rudra, the energy that is omnipresent, is in the best of the best and the worst of the worst.

Benefits of chanting Shri Rudram Namakam:

🌼Removes fear, confusions and vagaries of the mind

🌼Promotes overall health and happiness

🌼Relieves harmful effects of the planets - Augments positive influences and offsets negative impacts.

Ushapan (dawn water) is an Ayurvedic Dincharya (daily routine) process which advises drinking 1 litre of water first thing in the morning before brushing your teeth or going to the toilet.

The benefits increase if the water is stored in a copper vessel overnight.

🌼 Benefits of Ushapan

🌼 Removes Toxins:

Copper water washes away Ama in the intestines and moves it to the excretory channels so that it is removed through urine and stool. As a result, diseases like constipation, hyperacidity and dyspepsia are treated or prevented. The skin also becomes clear and beautiful.

🌼 Stimulates Digestion:

Ushapan also aids in strengthening the digestive fire. Copper has properties that aids in the process of peristalsis (movement of food through the food canal) and eliminates all Ama that is stuck to the intestines. As soon as Ama is removed, digestive fire becomes strong.

🌼 Balances Doshas:

Tamra Jal or copper water is positively charged and it can balance all three Doshas. That alone prevents many diseases from happening in the first place which starts with a dosha imbalance.

🌼 Stimulates the kidneys:

Daily practise of Ushpan stimulates the kidney in performing its functions normally. Absorption, circulation and excretion of impurities happens normally with the action of copper on the kidneys.

🌼 Aids in Weight Loss:

You get a three-fold weight loss benefit with Ushapan. Obesity happens when Kapha dosha goes out of balance. With Ushapan, all three doshas start becoming balanced, and on top of that, it also reignites your digestive fire. The overall result is strong metabolism and reduction in fat tissues.

🌼 How to do Ushapan:

- Wake up during the Brahma Muhurta (1h 30m before sunrise), or at most by 6am
- Sit up on the bed and take a few moments to become fully awake
- Take the copper vessel and drink a few gulps at a time
- Drink the water completely, or as much as you can

Stay tuned for interesting Dinacharya rituals.

दिनचर्या | A daily routine absolutely necessary to bring radical change in body, mind, and consciousness. Routine helps to establish balance in one's constitution. It also regularizes a person's biological clock, aids digestion, absorption and assimilation, and generates self-esteem, discipline, peace, happiness, and longevity.

Whether it is something that we would like to admit to ourselves or not, it’s true that our daily routines and habits play an integral role in our long term health. Every decision made throughout the day impacts the way that we look and feel: the foods we eat, lifestyle choices we make, even the subtle thoughts we think.

Ayurveda, India's 5,000 year old medical system, empowers us to take our health into our own hands, by providing simple practices that can be easily implemented over time to ensure a happier, healthier life.
Dinacharya is the Sanskrit term for daily Ayurvedic rituals which, when practiced regularly, help to support a life of optimal wellness through routine, detoxification and nourishment. When we are healthy and balanced, we are able to fulfill our dharma, our essential life’s purpose, allowing us to feel our best and share our gifts with the world.

Dinacharya should be practiced first thing in the morning in order to maintain connection to the circadian rhythms of nature. Current fast-paced societal norms keep us disconnected from nature due to our constant access to electricity, reliance on handheld devices, pressure to make the most of our days, social media, and the numerous other disconnects we have become accustomed to having in our lives.

Over our next posts, we’ll be sharing some valuable insights on best practices necessary to bring radical change in body, mind, and consciousness.
