Padmanabhaswamy Temple, Thiruvananthapuram - The richest temple in the world

The Padmanabhaswamy temple is a Hindu temple located in Thiruvananthapuram, the state capital of Kerala, India. Temple is dedicated to Padmanabhaswamy (Sri Vishnu). The deity is enshrined in the "Anantha Shayana" posture, the eternal yogic sleep on the serpent Adi Shesha. The name of the city of Thiruvananthapuram in Malayalam translates to "The City of Lord Anantha".

The present structure of the temple was built in 16th Century AD. Although the temple has been referred to in Sangam period of literature between 500 BC and 300 AD several times.

The architecture of the temple is a mix of indigenous Chera and Dravidian styles. Inside the garbhagriha or inner sanctum, an idol of Sri Padmanabha resting on his celestial eight-hooded snake Adishehsnag is placed. One of the creators from the Holy Trinity, Sri Brahma, emerges from a lotus through God’s navel. He is flanked by his consorts, Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, also called Sridevi, and the earth goddess. The idol is coated in an ayurvedic paste to keep it clean. Statues of other goddesses holding divine weapons are also placed there.

The temple complex also boasts of another shrine which predates the Padmanabhaswamy temple, Thiruvumbadi, dedicated to Parthasarathi- the divine charioteer of Arjuna. Temples dedicated to Rama, Sita, Ganesh and Hanuman are also found within the complex.

Another feature of interest is the clock tower, called Methan Mani constructed in the 1840s to celebrate the successful resistance to Muslim ruler Tipu Sultan’s invasion of Travancore. The clock is made out of the polished mahogany and has a quaint charm to it.

The source of the intrigue around the temple is its underground vaults. As per official sources, there are six vaults under the temple, named A-F. All the vaults, with the exception of the second, have been opened to make an inventory of the contents. The members of the team dealing with the inventory were astonished beyond comprehension by the glittering magnificence within.

Nataraja Temple, Chidambaram

Chidambaram Nataraja temple also known as Thillai Nataraja temple, is a Hindu temple dedicated to Nataraja – Shiva as the lord of dance – in the ancient temple town of Chidambaram in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is one of the five holiest Shiva temples - 'Panch Bhootha Sthalas' - each representing one of the five natural elements; Chidambaram represents Akasha (Sky). The other four temples are: Thiruvanaikaval Jambukeswara, Trichy (Water), Kanchipuram Ekambareswara (Earth), Thiruvannamalai Arunachaleswara (Fire) and Kalahasti Nathar (Air/Wind).

A unique feature of this temple is the bejeweled image of Nataraja. It depicts Shiva as the 'Lord of the dance' and is one of the few temples where Shiva is represented by an anthropomorphic murthi rather than the classic, anionic Lingam. The Cosmic Dance of Lord Nataraja symbolises the motion of the universe as sustained by Lord Shiva. The temple wall carvings display all the 108 karanas from the Natya Shastra by Bharata Muni, and these postures form a foundation of Bharatanatyam, a classical Indian dance.

The Nataraja temple has ancient roots. It finds mention in Tamil Sangam texts. A Shiva shrine existed at the place which was then called Thillai. The earliest mention of 'Dancing God of Chidambaram' is found in early 7th Century texts by Appar and Sambadar. The present temple was built in the 10th century when Chidambaram was the capital of the Chola dynasty, making it one of the oldest surviving active temple complexes in South India.

After its 10th Century consecration by the Cholas who considered Nataraja as their family deity, the temple has been damaged, repaired, renovated and expanded through the 2nd millennium. Temple suffered numerous attacks and destruction at the hands of Turkic muslim invaders of Delhi Sultanate and later Madurai Sultanate, who looted the temple for its immense riches. Most of the temple's surviving plan, architecture and structure is from the late 12th and early 13th centuries, with later additions in similar style.

The temple is spread over a 40-acre (16 ha) area, within layers of concentric courtyards. The inner sanctum, its connecting mandapams and pill

Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, Srirangam

In the ancient town of Srirangam, located on an island between the Kaveri and Kollidam rivers in Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu, stands the magnificent Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple. The temple is dedicated to Ranganatha, a form of the Supreme God, Maha Vishnu. Constructed in the Dravidian architectural style, the temple is glorified by Alvars (Vaishnava Saints) in their Divya Prabhandam (holy chants) and has the unique distinction of being not only the foremost among the 108 Divya Desams dedicated to Vishnu, but also the largest functioning Hindu temple in the world.

A temple at Srirangam is mentioned in Tamil Sangam literature (3rd century BC to the 4th century AD), including the Tamil epic Silapadikaram. The first temple at Srirangam was built by Dharma Varma Chola. Later when Kaveri river flood destroyed the temple, Early Chola King Killivalavan rebuilt the temple complex present today. From 9th to 16th Centuries temple was expanded, repaired and rebuilt several times by Chola, Pandya, Hoysala and Vijaynagar dynasties.

Temple was looted and destroyed by invading muslim armies of Alauddin Khilji led by his general Malik Kafur in 1311 AD. Arabic texts of the period state that he raided the golden temple on banks of Kaveri and took the temple gold and icon of deity to Delhi. During the second invasion by muslims in 1323, the sanctum's Vishnu image with its jewelry was pre-emptively removed by the Hindus before the Sultanate troops reached Srirangam. The temple was defended and according to the Tamil tradition some 13,000 Sri Vaishnava devotees of Srirangam, died in the fierce battle.

The Srirangam temple is the largest temple compound in India and one of the largest religious complexes in the world. The temple is enclosed by 7 concentric enclosures with courtyards (termed prakarams or mathil suvar). Each layer has walls and gopurams, which were built or fortified in and after the 16th century. It occupies an area of 155 acres (63 ha) with 81 shrines, 21 towers, 39 pavilions, and many water tanks integrated into the complex.

It is one of the most illustrious Vaishnava temples in South India rich in legend and history.

The Sri Vimana of the Brihadeshwara Temple, Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu

The great Brihadeshwara or Rajarajeshwara Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, at Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu is the oldest granite temple in the world. It was built by Chola Emperor Rajaraja I between 1003 and 1010 AD. The vimana tower above the sanctum sanctorum is one of the tallest in India at 216ft. This tower is 16 storeys high. At the top of the Vimana there is a cap stone weighing about 81 tons which is cut from a single piece granite. Even the modern day architects find it difficult to explain how this massive cap stone was lifted and placed on top of the hollow vimana measuring 216 ft (66 metres), 1000 years back.
