Today we aim to raise awareness of the fundamental standpoint of mangrove ecosystems and their unique qualities.
Mangrove ecosystems are particularly rare and special. They are located on the interface of land and see and provide a natural coastal defence against tsunamis, storm surges, erosion and rising sea levels. In addition, their soils serve as carbon sinks, capturing a vast amount of carbon. Besides contributing to climate mitigation, mangrove ecosystems are rich in biodiversity and also contribute to the protection, wellbeing and bioresources of coastal communities.
The rapid disappearance of mangrove ecosystems is and has been noticeable for a few decades now. Current estimates show alarming results that mangrove coverage has decreased by half in the past 40 years. UNESCO is deeply engaged in motivating the conservation of mangrove ecosystems and is involved in the sustainable development of their local communities. The organization is actively promoting the sustainable use of mangroves and is continuously working on improving the knowledge about mangroves worldwide.
