Set in the lovely Saligao village in North Goa (7-minute drive/ ride from Calangute and Candolim), the 100-year-old main house is where we live with our friendly doggy. My husband and I quit the big city life in Mumbai in favour of greener lungs and moved to the Sunshine State. When we first came to Saligao, we instantly fell in love with this quaint village where the bird calls are louder than traffic sounds and the neighbours smile and wave hello. Anirudh loves meeting new people and sharing a laugh. I, too, enjoy interacting with people from different backgrounds and learning about different cultures. We’re always happy to chat with our guests and share our home with them and help them experience a different, gentler side of Goa, which doesn’t usually feature on travel websites.

THE ROOMS

We have tried to retain the Goan-Portuguese aesthetic of the house while providing a comfortable stay with modern conveniences inside. Our home is our happy space and we have extended this philosophy to our guest rooms too. We have chosen bright, happy colours for the interiors and allowed lots of natural light to come in as that's something we love in a home.

There are two guest rooms are on the upper level. The rooms are interconnected - good for families or groups of friends. The rooms also have separate entrances for those who prefer privacy. We also have a charming garden cottage. Ensuite rooms have double/ twin beds (plus extra beds), natural light, balconies, HD TV, AC, water heater, minibar & electric kettles.

We also have a lovely garden where you might end up spending most of your time. Dotted with mango, chickoo and jackfruit trees, the garden is a good respite from a hectic day of sightseeing. Read a book, enjoy a cup of tea, listen to kingfishers, bulbuls and mynas, or play a boardgame or two in the common sitout. Staying in Saligao means that you have a chance to glimpse into the life of the local community. As this is a residential neighbourhood, we request you to please refrain from playing loud music post 10pm.

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD AND SURROUNDS

Saligao offers everything you would picture in a typical Goan village – grand old Portuguese houses squatting next to each other, ancient jackfruit, mango and chickoo trees, kids riding their bikes and cows moseying along in the small lanes. What drew us to this village is the perfect location, away from the chaos but close enough to the fantastic restaurants and beaches that are a big part of the Goa experience.

The village is beautiful and the people are friendly. A walk around the quaint lanes offers a chance to see Goan-Portuguese architecture with the balcaos, pretty oyster-shell windows, low, tiled roofs, and some very well-landscaped gardens. You will also hear many bird calls, and maybe even spot some birds like drongos, orioles, wagtails or sunbirds in the village and often in our garden too.
