Varanasi is the India of your imagination. Pilgrims come to the Ganges here to wash away sins in the sacred waters, to cremate their loved ones, or simply to die here, hoping for liberation from the cycle of rebirth.

The ghats (steps leading to the river) are one of the best places to be when there. Manikarnika (most auspicious), Assi (one of the biggest) and Dashwamedha (busiest and most colourful) among other are the must to be when there.

Happy Dussehra !

There is a lot of importance of flowers🌼, trees 🌲 and their leaves in Indian culture.

On this festival of Dussehra, here is interesting information about those worshipped on this day:

1. Apta Tree
It is a native Indian tree easily recognised due to its typical rough-textured twin leaves. In Dussehra puja, Apta leaves are plucked, are considered as gold and looted from each other metaphorically as per the ritual in Maharashtra and some other states.

2. Shami Tree
This leguminous tree also is found in the Indian subcontinent. This tree thrives mostly in dry areas and holds medicinal values.

According to the Indian tradition, Pandavas had lost to the Kauravas in a dice game and had to stay in a forest in exile. When they entered the final year of their exile and before entering the kingdom of Virat, they had hidden their weapons in a Shami tree. After the completion of exile, they recovered their weapons from the tree on Vijayadashmi and went on to defeat the Kauravas.

3. Marigold
These saffron-coloured flowers are quite popular. They are useful in worship and making garlands for decoration. They are also used very commonly in Dussehra. The vehicles, shops and homes of people are decorated with garlands made up of Marigold.

The Marigold flowers are also known as ‘Herb of the Sun’. These flowers can change peoples’ moods and eliminate stress and anxiety.

4. Mango Tree
Mango tree leaves are also very much used during Dussehra. They are used both in decoration and during puja rituals. Torans made from mango-tree leaves adorn the main doors of houses, temples and offices on Diwali. It is stated that mango leaves increase fertility. They are also known to possess antiseptic and antibacterial characteristics.

5. Ashoka Tree
Ashoka is considered a very sacred tree in Hinduism. There is a mention of Ashoka tree in the Ramayana about the Ashoka Vatika (garden of Ashoka trees). It is also associated with Kamadeva, the Hindu god of love, who included an Ashoka blossom among the five flowers in his quiver, where Ashoka represent seductive hypnosis.

Republic Day marks the adoption of India's constitution and the country's transition to a republic on January 26, 1950. Every year, the celebrations marking the day feature spectacular military and cultural pageantry. In New Delhi, armed forces personnel march along the Kartavya path in an elaborate display of military might. The epic show on Kartavya path eclipses everything else happening across the country on this auspicious day.

The celebrations are inaugurated with a grand parade which are held in the capital, New Delhi, from Raisina Hill near the Rashtrapati Bhavan (President's House), along the Kartavya path, past India Gate and onto the historic Red Fort. On this day, ceremonious parades take place at the Kartavya path, which is performed as a tribute to India, its unity in diversity and its rich cultural heritage by the states of India by building beautiful tableaus.

Wish you all a very happy Lohri festival.

Lohri is a special festival celebrated in regions near Punjab and Haryana and other norther Indian regions which is related to the sowing and harvesting of crops. It also celebrates the arrival of warmer weather because, a day after Lohri, the nights get shorter, and the days get longer.

On Lohri, people worship the new crop, light a fire outside their homes, express their gratitude to the Sun God and Fire God, and wish for good crop production in the upcoming year. They also offer bhog made with the harvested crops, rewadi, groundnut, jaggery, gajak, and peanuts to the Lohri bonfire. Additionally, the Lohri celebrations involve people going around the fire while singing traditional songs and dancing to the beats of dhol.
