Located approximately 40 km from Bodh Gaya, the Barabar Caves consist of four caves: Karan Chaupar, Lomas Rishi, Sudama, and Visvakarma. These caves, carved from a single granite rock, are believed to have been commissioned by Emperor Ashoka for Ajivaka ascetics. Among them, the Lomas Rishi cave stands out for its design mimicking traditional monk huts, boasting a meticulously polished interior. Noteworthy is the incorporation of Hindu and Jain sculptures within these Buddhist caves. An additional adjacent cave, the Nagarjuni Cave, situated around 2 km from the Barabar Caves, is contemporaneous with them, collectively referred to as 'satghar'.
