Instructions:

Start by dividing the ground beef into 4 equal portions (about 4 ounces each) and form them into round, flat patties. You can make them slightly larger than your hamburger buns since they will shrink while cooking.
Season the Patties:
Sprinkle salt, pepper, and garlic powder (if using) evenly on both sides of each patty. Press the seasoning into the meat gently.
Preheat the Grill or Pan:
Heat your grill to medium-high heat or a skillet/pan over medium-high heat. If using a pan, you can add a little oil to prevent sticking.
Cook the Patties:
Place the burger patties on the grill or in the pan. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on one side (for medium-rare), then flip them and cook for another 3-4 minutes (adjust cooking time based on your desired level of doneness).
Add Cheese (Optional):
If you want cheese on your burgers, place a cheese slice on each patty a minute or so before they are done cooking, allowing it to melt over the top.
Toast the Buns:
While the patties are cooking, split the hamburger buns in half and lightly toast them on the grill or in a toaster.
Assemble the Burgers:
Place a lettuce leaf on the bottom half of each bun, followed by a burger patty (with or without cheese). Then add your choice of tomato slices, onion slices, and pickles. Spread condiments like ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise on the top half of the bun.
Put It All Together:
Place the top bun over the toppings to complete your burger.
