Gilikan Theyyam

One of the main gods in the Theyyam universe. Guilikan Theyyam is linked to death. The theyyam is also known as “mruthyudean,” “kaalan,” and other names that all refer to the death deity. According to the Puranas, when deity Shiva invoked the deity of death, humans began to live for forever. This causes turmoil on Earth and Heaven; to address the situation, Shiva created a bhootha known as Gulikan to offer death to those in misery and gather their souls.

Gulikan Theyyam wears a very extended headgear made of coconut leaves and wood. The “Koladhaari” must wear it during the performance and perform strong dancing routines. Along with the headgear, he will have to walk on a wooden pole that is roughly 5 feet high. This represents that the god is neither on Earth nor in the sky. Unlike other theyyam makeups, Gulikan theyyam features a white body painting known as “arichaanth” (made of finely ground rice powder) that portrays the ashes.

Gulikan Theyyam is performed by the Malayan community. Malaya means “from the hills.” According to mythology, the Malayan community is direct descendants of Lord Shiva himself.

Muchilott Bhagavathi is a popular Mother Goddess Theyyam in Kerala’s Kannur and Kasaragod regions. Muchilott bhagavathi is known as “Amma” by devotees, which is the Malayalam term meaning mother.In mythology, Muchilott Bhagavathi was a clever lady who defeated egoistic males in a discussion competition. Knowing they had been vanquished by a woman, the group resolved to badmouth her, which resulted in her death. She was reborn as a goddess to combat evil, console, and bless those in need.

Muchilott Bhagavathi is performed by the Vannan family’s most esteemed member, known as “Peruvannan”. Muchilott Kaavu (Temple) hosts performances from December to March each year. The temple hosts the festival every year for three days. The theyyam is performed on the third day about noon.
