Chamba chappals (slippers) are a tradition that date back to the times of king Sahil Verman (in the early ninth Century). When he got married to the princess of Noorpur, the chappal (slipper) makers or cobblers came along with tailors and make-up artists as dowry to be of service to the queen and the kingdom. It is said that before that time, the people of Chamba only wore crude grass shoes. For a long time, these were worn by kings and queens only. But it was after the British popularized it and protected the art that it became a product of public use (as told by a shopowner). Chamba is a hub of such stories. You talk to anyone resident and she he will always have a new one to tell. These are handcrafted leather-made chappals (slippers) that come in natural leather as well as other colors. These chappals (slippers) now come in various colors. It is one of the latest experiments that have been done in these slippers. Pink, blue, yellow, purple, firozi, red, orange, brown and green are the colors that come in powdered forms and are mixed in a thinner before being used on the chappals (slippers) and is later protected by lacquer.
