It was built by King Narasimhadeva I of the Ganga dynasty in the 13th century. Its artworks surprise. It is one of the finest examples of Kalinga architecture. It is said that the Sun Temple was built in such a way that the first rays of the sun fall directly on the place of worship and the idol of the Lord.
