On October 8, 29-year-old mountaineer Sheetal Raj from Salmora village in Pithoragarh district, Uttarakhand, made history by scaling the 8,188-meter-high Mount Cho Oyu. Cho Oyu is the sixth-highest mountain in the world, located on the Nepal-Tibet border. With this remarkable achievement, Sheetal not only showcased her indomitable willpower but also became a symbol of the immense strength of women from the Himalayan region.

Sheetal’s journey was not only physically challenging but also mentally tough. Nearly two years ago, a serious injury made her think that her mountaineering career might be over. She suffered a ligament tear in her knee during a skiing accident and had to undergo surgery. "After the surgery, it felt like everything was over," Sheetal shared. However, she never gave up and rebuilt herself with sheer determination. Watching the film *12th Fail* reignited her inner strength, and with the support of organizations like the Hans Foundation and Ethical Himalaya Expedition, Sheetal resumed her mountaineering journey.

In August 2018, at just 22 years of age, Sheetal Raj became the youngest female mountaineer to climb the world's third-highest peak, Kanchenjunga. In May 2019, she conquered Mount Everest as part of the *Climbing Beyond the Summit: Everest Expedition 2019*.

Sheetal was first introduced to mountaineering in 9th grade through the NCC. Her father, Umashankar Raj, is a taxi driver earning around ₹6,000 per month, while her mother, Sapna Devi, is a homemaker. When Sheetal successfully reached the summit of Everest, her mother proudly said, "My child was always good at everything. I’m proud that she fulfilled her dream." Her father called it a symbol of women’s empowerment.
