In the interconnected circulation, the front door leads you to the
secretarial corridor with the director’s space on the left. Another door
reveals a lounge for entertaining with a verandah and exquisite furniture
inspired by East-Indian crafts. Between the two wings of the bungalow is
an art gallery, lending not just an artistic connection but structural stability
with a semicircular arch that becomes a repeating motif throughout the
space, be it in the modern frames in the director’s office or the applique
that highlights the existing brickwork over the doorways. From the rope
furniture (“Hairy chairs” as she calls them) and Burma teak elements to the
choice of artwork, down to the switchboards, every object balances the
old and new with a wistful nostalgia making the space, much like the city,
evade the clutches of conformity — imbuing the contemporaneity with the elan of Bangaliana.
