" कालका- शिमला रेल रूट का विस्तार शिवालिक रेंज से लेकर धौलाधर की चोटियों तक है। इस रेल रूट को बनाने में तमाम तरह की दिक्कतें पेश आई थी। दरअसल जिस समय इस रेल रूट को जमीन पर उतारने की कवायद की गई उस वक्त तकनीक आज की तरह नहीं थी। इस रेल रूट की बड़ी खासियत यह है कि वो रोड के समांतर चलती है और उसकी ऊंचाई रोड से ज्यादा है।

कालका-शिमला रेलवे लाइन को यूनेस्को ने जुलाई 2008 में इसे व‌र्ल्ड हेरिटेज में शामिल किया था। इसी रूट पर कनोह रेलवे स्टेशन पर ऐतिहासिक आर्च गैलरी पुल 1898 में बनी थी। यह पुल 64.76 किमी पर मौजूद है। आर्च शैली में निर्मित चार मंजिला पुल में 34 मेहराबें हैं।

इस सेक्शन पर 103 सुरंगों की के कारण शिमला में आखिरी सुरंग को 103 नंबर सुरंग का नाम दिया गया है। इसी कारण से ठीक ऊपर बने बस स्टॉप को भी अंग्रेजों के जमाने से ही 103 स्टेशन के नाम से जाना जाने लगा, जबकि इसका नाम 103 स्टॉप होना चाहिए।

भले ही इस ट्रैक को विश्व धरोहर का दर्जा मिल गया है, लेकिन 105 वर्ष पुराने इस ट्रैक पर कई खामियां भी हैं। इस ट्रैक पर बने कई पुल कई जगह इतने जर्जर हो चुके हैं कि स्वयं रेलवे को खतरा लिखकर चेतावनी देनी पड़ रही है। ऐसे असुरक्षित पुलों पर ट्रेन निर्धारित गति 25 किलोमीटर प्रतिघंटा की जगह 22.5 किलोमीटर प्रतिघंटा की गति से चलती है।
